Brake breather - Pointless?

Post by chosenview »

Still not worked out how to publish pics here but follow the link

does anyone know why there is what looks to be a breather that goes from inside the brake drum to the outside?

I've removed the rubber pipe from the metal tube but the pipe was only a foot or so long anyway

Pointless?? Well I guess that depends on the condition of the rubber seal between the drum and the back-plate.

The Volvo is quite unique in that the drum is (allegedly) a fully sealed unit, and the breather is required to allow airflow to compensate for themal expansion of the contained air volume - like an axle.
If like mine, your seals are perished, then the breather brovided no benefit.

The brake set up is the same as LWB Series 3 Land Rovers, and they are not sealed.

Does that help?

Ah. Ok yes the drum seal is perished and all sorts of crap in with the pads.

Nice idea to seal the brakes but 40 years on........

Before I'd taken the drum off I had assumed the pipe somehow connected into the portal box. Given it does not, is the portal meant to have a breather?

Ok, worked out that the portal breaths through the axle as there is no tight seal between them.

Another question for those that have done it before. My front brake pads had 2 return springs installed. The manual only shows 1. Given the second appears to be a faf to install. I have left it off. Is this a mistake?
