Speedo popping

Post by audiocontr »

My speedo is now popping while driving. It is no longer smooth. Tends to bounce to 15mph every second or so when simply crawling forward. Any suggestions of what to look at?

My guess would be worn/busted internal plastic gear.
You could try removing end attached to front diff and try rotating slowly with a drill and see if it still does it - if so, then obviously issue is in the speedo, if not then if could be the gears in the diff.
I used the Pinz speedo repair in the tech section to fix mine - removing the outer ring just takes 10-15 mins of very slow and steady work

I had this same problem on a totally unrelated vehicle many years ago. Turned out to be that the speedo cable had dried out and was occasionally binding in the cable tube. I removed the cable, lubed it generously and reassembled. Problem solved. YMMV.
