Right side oil leak.

Right side oil leak.
I've developed some steady seepage on the right side of the engine. It looks to be coming from around the oil cooler. In the book I see one gasket beneath the oil filter casing and two oil cooler seal rings. I figure I may as well change the oil filler pipe gasket and dipstick tube o-ring also, just in case. Any suggestions on disassembly or is it as straight forward as it appears?
TIA

It is pretty much straight forward. There are shims on the bolts holding down the cooler and spacers under the cooler which you need to be mindfull of but other than that pretty simple. A good chance to clean the oil cooler while you are there. Recently had to clean mine, it was almost 80 percent plugged with mud.

By the time I saw this, I'd already ordered the parts from Scott...I'll eyeball that particular area real close since I'll have a relatively unobstructed view with the oil cooler apart and the oil tubes all out of the way. Thanks.mjnims wrote:Mike
I was thinking and on some ocassions we see the fuel pump gasket leaking also. Might be worth a look before ordering parts. I know I hate the little leaks and seem to spend more time stopping them then any other items on the truck. I just hate those quarter size oil drips in the morning.

Parts arrived Thursday so I'm tearing into it today. I need to do a bit of R & R to that pesky molex connector too. This week my charging light started coming on at low RPMs. Road speed, no light... stop sign/red light, indicator light comes on. I hope it's just a weak connection at that molex. I know the belt is tight cuz I messed with that the last time I serviced it.

The wetness on the thermostat led me to suspect the cooler was leaking a bit. The filler pipe and dipstick tube areas were dry.

The mounting gasket seemed cracked just a little bit and tore away when I wiped it. SWPA Pres Mike was right on target with the idea of the fuel pump gasket. No reassembly until I get new gaskets for that.

All the wires and connections seemed clean and solid for the alternator. The suppressor condensor wire has been broken for quite some time so I don't think that's causing my charging light to come on. I do have a new one that I've just not installed yet, guess now is as good a time as any. Any ideas on the alternator? Should I pull it and have it checked out?

Great pics thanks. My leak seems to be coming from the fuel pump base too. I hope it's that and not the rear main seal or timing cover!PinzEOD wrote:![]()

Any suggestions on what to clean up the oil residue on the block with? I figure the cleaner I can get it, it'll be easier to tell where it's coming from if it come back.

I got some good advice from Scott at EI when I ordered up the fuel pump gasket kit (basically a rebuild kit). He advised me to put a meter on the alternator before tearing it out. If it's putting out proper voltage, my problem is probably the voltage regulator or wiring. Thank you Scott.
For cleaning, another recent post suggests regular old Spray N Wash laundry spray works great. I'll certainly be giving that a try before reassembly.

Are you using a sealant on the gaskets when installing the new ones?

I hadn't given it much thought. I'll use shellac on one side only, just like with the valve cover gaskets. On the fuel pump, I'll assemble it dry except for the engine mount gasket. Of course, I am ALWAYS open to suggestions from the more experienced fellers in this regard.

Jim LaGuardia recommended using the spray copper only on the oil pump side of the seal in case you have to remove it in the field. Wonder if the same would hold true for the other gaskets.PinzEOD wrote:I hadn't given it much thought. I'll use shellac on one side only, just like with the valve cover gaskets. I really hate those paper gaskets of any kind, just dont seem like they'll hold up very long.
