The Vans have long range cameras inside of them. I am not sure exactly what the technology is that they use but LAZAR is very common here. Their are web sites that give the places of static GATSO cameras I am not sure about mobile ones. Incidentally many GPS machines advise one were most static cameras are and this information can be updated.
It is against the law with big penalties if any technical evasion is used to defeat getting caught. That includes special paints or radar jamming devices. I was on a web site a few months ago were by a man was woken up by the police at 4 o'clock in the morning wanting to inspect his car for radar jamming devices. They found one and confiscated his car I understand. What I believe happens in practice is this, a police man aims his speed detection device at a suspected offender and a spurious reading appears on the instrument. A note is then placed on the police data bank and if the same thing happens again, the man is paid a visit at an inconvenient time.
Mostly I try my best to obey speed limits, occasionaly one forgets or is distracted in some small way. I was detected 2 years ago on Boxing day. I was cresting a hill on an empty duel carriage way with a speed limit of 70mph, I allowed my landcruiser to reach 80mph by not releasing the pressure on the accelerator after cresting. A few weeks later I received a summons via the post asking me to pay now or go to court were the fine imposed would be greater. I also had to surrender my Driving Licence for them to deduct points from it. I was awarded 3 points as well as a fine. The maximum number of points that one can sustain either at once or by totting up is 12. After that disqualification for a time decided by the courts but laid down by law. Depending on an offence a verious amount of point can be awarded. Excessively exceeding the speed limit may render one a temporary disqualification. Speeding at over 100mph is an automatic temporary disqualification from driving and possibly a retest. Poeple have been caught doing silly speeds 150 and more etc, they get all the above but a 12 month or longer disqualification plus a retest and an automatic jail sentence

Speeding is very much a way of life over here, but different police forces take verious views on it. Years ago I was advised by a police officer that doing 80 on a motorway with a speed limit of 70 would be OK and that no officer would take issue. Not so now, I even remember travelling at a far greater speed than this in convoy with police on our motorways, they did not give a hoot. These days are very different. The North Wales Police Force is extremely aggressive not only against speeding but any small motoring offence. They will stop you for nothing at all all just to inspect your vehicle and I am not talking about well organized road blocks here. They will just flash a blue light and expect you to stop. They have the right to do a personal search also. My sister was stopped by the North Wales Police for absolutely no reason, they actualy told her this. They had followed her for several miles. she new that they would stop her. they pulled here over and did a visual inspection and then went leaving her late for here appointment and angry.
The Chief Constable of North Wales is notorious and even disliked by other police officers in other forces and is also unpopular with some government agencies. He is very much an embarrassment because of his outlandish crusades against motorists but they can not impeach him easily. He did come close I believe. He even had prosecuted a visiting chief constable from another force who was on holiday
