Andy, thank you for the information.

The Vans have long range cameras inside of them. I am not sure exactly what the technology is that they use but LAZAR is very common here. Their are web sites that give the places of static GATSO cameras I am not sure about mobile ones. Incidentally many GPS machines advise one were most static cameras are and this information can be updated.

It is against the law with big penalties if any technical evasion is used to defeat getting caught. That includes special paints or radar jamming devices. I was on a web site a few months ago were by a man was woken up by the police at 4 o'clock in the morning wanting to inspect his car for radar jamming devices. They found one and confiscated his car I understand. What I believe happens in practice is this, a police man aims his speed detection device at a suspected offender and a spurious reading appears on the instrument. A note is then placed on the police data bank and if the same thing happens again, the man is paid a visit at an inconvenient time.

Mostly I try my best to obey speed limits, occasionaly one forgets or is distracted in some small way. I was detected 2 years ago on Boxing day. I was cresting a hill on an empty duel carriage way with a speed limit of 70mph, I allowed my landcruiser to reach 80mph by not releasing the pressure on the accelerator after cresting. A few weeks later I received a summons via the post asking me to pay now or go to court were the fine imposed would be greater. I also had to surrender my Driving Licence for them to deduct points from it. I was awarded 3 points as well as a fine. The maximum number of points that one can sustain either at once or by totting up is 12. After that disqualification for a time decided by the courts but laid down by law. Depending on an offence a verious amount of point can be awarded. Excessively exceeding the speed limit may render one a temporary disqualification. Speeding at over 100mph is an automatic temporary disqualification from driving and possibly a retest. Poeple have been caught doing silly speeds 150 and more etc, they get all the above but a 12 month or longer disqualification plus a retest and an automatic jail sentence

Speeding is very much a way of life over here, but different police forces take verious views on it. Years ago I was advised by a police officer that doing 80 on a motorway with a speed limit of 70 would be OK and that no officer would take issue. Not so now, I even remember travelling at a far greater speed than this in convoy with police on our motorways, they did not give a hoot. These days are very different. The North Wales Police Force is extremely aggressive not only against speeding but any small motoring offence. They will stop you for nothing at all all just to inspect your vehicle and I am not talking about well organized road blocks here. They will just flash a blue light and expect you to stop. They have the right to do a personal search also. My sister was stopped by the North Wales Police for absolutely no reason, they actualy told her this. They had followed her for several miles. she new that they would stop her. they pulled here over and did a visual inspection and then went leaving her late for here appointment and angry.

The Chief Constable of North Wales is notorious and even disliked by other police officers in other forces and is also unpopular with some government agencies. He is very much an embarrassment because of his outlandish crusades against motorists but they can not impeach him easily. He did come close I believe. He even had prosecuted a visiting chief constable from another force who was on holiday  he was doing 94mph and lost his licence for a period, he is very lucky not to have lost his job as well.

Wow! At least here the gendarmes need to have a reasonable suspicion and or probable cause to stop you. Speeding qualifies as reasonable suspicion, but they can't just stop people at random.

There has to be an articulable reason for the stop, not just something like: That was the day we stopped blue cars.

Makes me appreciate some of the things the colonists wrote into the Constitution over here duting the unpleasantness in the 1700's.

Yes Andy, BUT look at the trends in America. The People's Republic of Boulder (Liberal Land) has Stoplight/speeding cameras mounted at some lights. Denver is floating a "how about getting funding" for about 40 surveillance cameras for the upcoming Democratic convention. We all know they won't ever come down. Aurora Colorado just had an auto accident caused by a "malfunctioning speed camera. It just sat there and pretended to be a bar room disco strobe and blinded a driver who rear ended a stopped vehicle at a green light. Guess who got the ticket. It took 24 hours according to the local news to get a piece of paper duct taped over the flashing strobe. The police told the news to call city council and city council told the news to call the police and finally the fire department came out and taped over the problem. We are on our way to join the rest of the what do they call it?? The new world order of One world order.World War 3 is quickly being won with out a shot fired.

Much smarter men than myself have stated some central themes to life in a democracy over and over again.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."
-C.S. Lewis

"Those who will give up essential liberties to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety"
Benjamin Franklin

"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquillity of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsel or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."
Samuel Adams , debates of 1776

It is unfortunate that we no longer teach these things in the public schools. Even here in the southern part of fly-over country liberal feel good themes are making inroads. The scenary in Colorado cannot overcome what is rapidly becoming an accepted way of existence. I was going to say "life", but I don't think the word qualifies anymore.

Andy, their is a lot of truth in what you say.

We have traffic light violation light over here also by the way. Their are two main cost benefits for the authorities using cameras. 1, Less police officers patrolling the streets = less expenditure of wages. 2 Revenue collected from offenders goes directly into Police coffees.
They are two powerful reasons, to overcome if you want to prevent an epidemic of cameras spreading like wild fire. The camera companies are very aggressive sales poeple and influence poeple at least over here at high levels

Camera technology is sophisticated enough here to plot the average speed here from one camera to another or even across a county or road network. It does this with registration recognition software and is linked to a central data base at Swansea here for the whole of GB. So it is impossible to beat the cameras in some areas by merely slowing own for them, they will calculate your speed every were you drive. Even more sinister is the fact that they also know were ever you are at any time of the day whilst you are driving within these areas. This is simply frightening.

In London this technology is being used to charge nay one driving into the Greater London Area. Drive their and it is possible to receive a huge Bill ££. Some vehicles such as older Landrovers and dare I say it Pinzgauers and Volvo TGBs will be charged £200 a day for every day you vehicle is in that area. We are just debating this, on an other Off road forum in GB. Poeple are very upset.

Anthony, I don't have much of a problem imagining that type of thinking taking root here with the politicians and the tree hugging greenies. It will be more money out of taxpayers pockets under the guise that it is to fight global warming and to protect the children.

The problem in my opinion is that here (and probably over there) everybody knows what needs to be done but most are too lazy to get off of their duffs, get organized, and vote these self serving sobs out of office.

It's too easy to be lazy or feel helpless and to shout down those who point out that the emperor isn't wearing any clothes. Want an example? Have you seen Dennis here lately? Just my opinion.

Andy,

I have not seen Dennis on here for a while now, nor am I surprised. I understand that he has received a number of threats because of his views and comments on here. I think that is way out of line. I believe that he was an asset to this forum. His technical knowledge and experiences was well appreciated by many and he always made his articles interesting with remises. He is very much a character, which is not everybody's cup of tea, I understand. He certainly livened up things on here and may have had some differences occassionaly, with one or two. I believe that he will be missed, I certainly do. I thought that we lived in the free world, evidently not but to threaten a man for expressing an opinion, well it beggars belief.

You are right. I can't blame him. It is peculiar to me that what he posted wasn't any worse than OUR POLITCIANS say in seriousness and yet he gets electonically crucified for posting satire. He was a great source of information and I definitely miss his posts.

Andy and Anthony you have missed the point. I read a quote the other day. The really intelligent man holds the same beliefs and opinions as yourself. That made Dennis very unintelligent in several people minds. Not working for him on a daily basis, I have begun to miss the Dennisisms. You see he is very Liberal and I am a died in the wool conservative. One thing we could agree on was we could agree to disagree. That attitude was prevalent when I was growing up. Now it is sorely absent from the daily persona of people. Many seem to have the attitude that if you disagree and won't come to my opinion, I MUST destroy you. It is shame. We need both the ultra left and the ultra right. Kinda like the reflective markers along the highway when visibility goes bad. You can see the left and the right side and pick your path down the middle. Oh well, let the flaming begin.

Ps when Dennis and I joined we were told by several people we didn't belong here this is the California board. Now it has become the California and Kansas board. Ignore the man behind the curtain. I am the all knowing OZ ignore the man behind the curtain. Back to lurking. Working for Dennis for 6 years repairing pinzies every day gave me no credibility on repairing Pinzies. Oh wait unless I was going to fix it for free. And charge, how dare you charge me. This is my hobby, so it must be yours fix it for free!!

Lightning, I'm not sure that I totally missed the point. I don't know Dennis personally, I've talked with him on the telephone when I needed the gear for my windshield wiper motor. But, since day one I have been amazed that he was so willing to share his knowledge with everyone on the forum for free. Jim LaGuardia is another one who unstintingly helps people with their Pinz problems. Fixing vehicles is these guy's bread and butter and yet they pass out detailed advice to people they don't know, other than by screen name. I've seen them help tons of folks here.

And yet, because Dennis has different ideas, which probably were influenced by the fact he did not grow up here and that he has traveled the world, he is free to give advice and yet can't state an opinion? That is wrong.

I mean you don't have to read his opinion or like it. That silly little thing he posted apparently was funny to him. He didn't direct it or film it for Pete's sake. He just passed it on. Big deal. And like I said, anything he has said on this forum regarding American politics (and quite often said tongue in cheek) is nothing that the people in Washington and the press aren't saying in sound bites and scathing editorials or opinion pieces every doggone day.

That whole deal came across like some sort of a lynching just because the man is different. I'm sure there were a couple personal animosities for percieved wrongs thrown in there too. But, if in gerneral chat there is no room for different opinions or politics then there shouldn't be room for petty animosities either.

I'm starting to rant. I just think it was wrong and I for one am truly sorry that Dennis pulled up stakes on this forum. No matter what his politics he was a friend for many in times of need.

BTW, I am also uber conservative which I've mentioned more than once on this board in case someone wants to flame me for being a bleeding heart or some such.

If this bothers someone, sorry, that's just the way I feel.

I think that it is perfectly OK to dislike some one for their views, I may not be liked, so what. It is perfectly OK to counter some ones arguments with some of ones own, a tit for tat, shall we say. What has happened here is beyond that, it is not acceptable for some one to be personally threatened, I am not talking just about comments made on this forum but off line. I would hope that every one here would condone such appalling behaviour, no matter what their views. I am not speaking up for him because he is a limey, I do not give a toss what his or anyone's nationality is. I simply can not accept that what he has said deserves such treatment. He has given a good service to this forum and I am appalled by what I see as cowardice and ungentlemanly behavior, hounding a man, at his home. Why are not all the poeple whom he has helped speaking up for him, what are they afraid of? What does this say about us all? Are poeple so insecure, are we all not bigger than this?

not to be a pain here but what does this have to do with the topic. Start a new thread already, it is after all a topic deserving its own thread.

Mims, I thought about that. I didn't mean to "steal" the thread, we jsut sort of meandered off to GPS etc. I apologize for that, but the subject had been eating at me in the way folks jumped on the guy. One final shot, re Eric's comment. Eric, he will probably make money off of me because I trust him from what I've seen on this forum. You can also bet the farm that if I was closer to California and needed work that Jim LaGuardia would get the business because I have faith in him for the same reasons. I really don't care what their politics or thought processes are.

Mims are you guys gonna be able to resurrect the SWPA website?

Regards to all whether you agree or disagree
