What is a good affordable GPS for the Pinz?

Hello all,

I have been using an old Magellan Pioneer GPS unit which recently died. I know this equipment is outdated and was wondering what other Pinz owners are using when offroad.

What I am looking for is something to replace that old Magellan that does not cost an arm and a leg, or your first born child. The equipment must be rugged and stand up to the riggers of offroading in my favorite vehicle.

Suggestions would be appreciated!

Back in the old days I used to use a hired guide. They were easily procured in the bars, greasy spoon diners, whore houses, and gas stations that I, from time to time, happened to come across.

Then I discovered compasses and maps. It is remarkable just how accurate they can be, provided of course you are smart enough to use them.

Though it may seem amazing, the GPS I use in my Porsche works just as well as it does in my Pinz. I have never found a reason to have a special one for Pinzing, and neither will you.

tony  one funny dude

my latest garmin is the GPSmap 60CS with the city select software. it is AWESOME. it gives me routes (go to) all over the country with turn by turn beeps and the screen is beautiful. i also use it for bumming around the mountains in my boots when i don't want to stick to a trail. i've seen places not many others will ever see just because i can stay located anywhere. this one has a compass. the newer (current) model of this has a removable memory card with more capacity than my 56mb. this one is quite adequate, tho, even for a drive across the us. accuracy and detail these days are both xlnt, too.

i might sell this one for a good deal so i can get the 7" screen vehicle gps garmin now offers. it's in like new condition except for a couple of nearly invisible scratches on the screen. it's a very scratch resistant screen.

a good GPS

Go to jeephorizons.com, find the forum and under the electronics you will find some very good ideas about GPS devices for wheeling.

I use the Garmin 176C in my Pinz. It will run on 24v and is very rugged. The biggest draw back is the screen is only 3". While this is a draw back it also is small enough to be out of field of view while driving.
You should make an SWPA outing one of these days and check out the variety of equipment other local Pinz owners are using.

I, too, have used the Garmin 176C. Not the cheapest unit (when new), but I have since upgraded to the 276C. Better screen visibility, more detailed display, turn by turn routing and voice instructions. The receiver is MUCH more sensitive (quicker starts, more satelites). But it's still in the $600 range, more with software, memory, etc.

Personally, I couldn't live without it, but it was a little steep to get there! I've got mounts in all four of my vehicles, and I take it with me on long trips.

my 176c went to a fisherman in europe somewhere back in 2002. that screen sure sucked compared to this 60cs. this one works better all around. but my next one (soon) is the StreetPilot 7500 with the 7" touch screen and remote control. that thing looks amazing. my 60cs will be asigned to hikes, exclusively. i hope this can happen before i run into something (as i'm squinting at my gps).
