Reverse Switch

Post by goudacheese »

Has anyone installed the reverse backup switch? I have been looking all over the transmission trying to find where it installs and the only bolt that I can find that is big enough is where you fill the transmission! I was told it is above the shaft, but I still don't see it. :!:

right above the trans output flange is a 17mm plug, pull that and you will see a plunger. (see picture)

You may have to cut the tail off the plunger to make it work, or if you have a new style one with a recess, just pull the old one out and replace with new one

I confirm - I had to cut the "tail" with a dremel tool.
BTW, being afraid of risk of dropping the plunger into the gearbox, I put the reverse gear before undoing the screw plug.

Do I have to buy the switch from magna steyr or is it commonly available in the market? I have seen it in the spare parts catalogue with nr 7111850750, Kostal 8860; was it installed also in other cars?
Thanks

I am sure there are several alternatives.
I bought a Fiat Iveco spare part ... small Iveco vans and trucks have a ZF transmission, and presumably ZF use a standardized switch (and thread) on gearboxes they produce.

Readily available switch. Check with the Unimog dealers, same switch as used on the Clauss overdrives....whole lot better price.
