Oil cooler thermostatic valve

Hello
Is there a simple way to find out whether the oil cooler is working properly or not.
I just have a feel that the engine is getting very hot after some time of idling.
For example: I can't touch the cylinder head valve cover, but the oil cooler appears cold.
