Tires-Maxxis Bighorns

FYI, I miss the LTB Swampers I bought for my second to last 6x6, now Todd's 712. I got stuck on wet grass in an off camber trying to back up my trailer. With the lockers on it would move but I couldn't steer well enough to get it backed up where I needed it to be. I finally relented and hooked up my unlocked M37. Backed it right up there where I needed it so I could unload the 4k pounds of corn. So far, the Maxxis Big Horns are ok on the street but aren't what I have been used to which is the LTB Swampers. FWIW my M37 has old bias ply Buckshots and if I could get them for the Pinz I would. Would the Big Horn be considered and all terrain or a mud terrain? I think it appears to be a little of both.

I like mine, I had to air down on Sunday to extracate a Freightliner with a 3000 gallon tar tank trailer stuck in the dirt lot down the street.
A big Dodge 4x4 with a diesel wouldn't move it at all, so I took a try and moved him about a foot with all 3 levers pulled, then had the Dodge hook to my front pintle and got him the rest of the way out
They were both impressed with the pulling power and ability to lock the diffs.
If I had a 712 I may have been able to do it myself.
That said, My Maxxis tires had a very good grip

maybe I didn't say that right. They are fine 95 percent of the time. I just miss the LTBs. I felt like I could see the LTBs wearing out as I drove almost so they were not perfect by any means but worked great in almost all off road situations.

The only comparison I have is the stock worn Maloyas, but so far I like the traction, road manners, and of course price.

I just took off a brand new set of 34" super swampers and switched back to cooper st-c's. Boy did I hate the swampers! They compared to the stock maloyas in every way: bias-ply, scary on road, harsh off road, and wore way too quickly. Now that I'm running 33" radials, it's much better. The coopers seem to last forever... ...even on a Pinzgauer!

Do you all spend a lot of time off road where there are lots of rocks with sharp sidewall eating edges? I'm wondering about sidewall plys and I think I only read about 6 ply tires here so far.
Maybe the reason I like 10 ply tires so much is because of the weight I carry in my trucks on those types of roads which are also littered with mesquite thorns.
The Intercos on my 710 have held up much better than any Goodyear/Goodrich tires on my F 250. The Toyos now on the Ford are only good for about 8-10 months (about 2 months better than the Good tires) before needing to be replaced.
Maybe ya'll don't want stiff sidewalls because you air down more than I do.
Not trying to hijack thread but trying to find out of plys are as important to you all as tread pattern appears to be.

I really liked the Trxxs tires for the 10 ply rating and the sidewall durability. I managed 35K miles out of my 712's set. When it was time for new tires they did not have any 285's and did not know when they would have them back in stock. I went with the Mickey Thompson MTZ's and have already had to have one replaced with only 5K miles on them. I am hoping for more durability out of them and writing this one off as a random problem. The failure came on my 710 so I am a little concerned about the 712's tires. I tend to drive the 712 a little more aggressive anyway. I have never had good luck with BFG tires on any truck. The sidewalls always seem to fail. I guess it could be the desert terrain.

I have trashed my 34" Swampers in only 18 months and about 18,000 on/offroad miles...
I am also looking for a new tire....

I've been real happy with my nitto mud grapplers I have about 10,000 miles on them and the still look good. they are a ten ply tire

I've had one good set of BFGs, the long trails, on a Chevy 1/2 ton pickup Z-71. The ones that came on my F 250 lasted about 4 months. After that the Goodyears, their Wranglers didn't last a year and the last one was so worn they couldn't/wouldn't make an adjustment. Then Goodyear all steel, no flats but they were only good for about 7 months. Went through two pairs of them before I said the heck with it, I'm buying cheaper tires.
The Intercos (knock on wood) haven't lost an ounce of air and have had some pretty good mesquite thorns in them. I guess the thorns didn't make it through the belts. For those who aren't familiar with mesquite thorns they can get to be about 3 plus inches long and when they dry they are practically nails. A personal aside here; Back in the old days I was chasing a smuggler one night on the Rio Grande and had a mesquite thorn slice my cheek open to the bone. Took 13 stitches, didn't get him, but we got his dope.
Anyway, the Intercos tread has not worn too badly either. I still have about 50% (after almost a year) and if I would down shift before getting half way up the hills I wouldn't spin the rear tires letting the clutch out and probably still have more tread left. I really hope when these are worn out to get some more and I may even put them on the F-250.

"You ain't just whistlin' Dixie!" I was going to try to flip them on the wheels and rotate them, then I decided it just isn't worth it. They are vanishing fast. They are great in almost all off-road conditions. They stink in the snow. Especially hard packed or icey stuff. I'll burn them up then get something else and take better care of them.
Big O has an "all terrain" tire that looks really nice. They are siped too. My local dealer will give me a good price on them. I know several guys that have them on their trucks and love them.

Interesting that people seem to be getting away from the BFG mudders. I've been using them on all of my off road vehicles for at least 10 years, and have yet to find a better tire. Of course they're not the cheapest tires around, but they do work very well in almost everything except real fluffy sand. (Not the tires fault, just that they're too damn skinny to get any real flotation on a Pinz.

This has been a very interesting and appropriate thread for me right now. I need to get new tires for my pinz. I have the BFG Mudders and they were great tires but I think I have only had them for two years and 8 months of that the pinz sat in the drive way with a twisted rear axel housing. So I was hoping to find something that lasted a little bit longer without sacrificing to much off road performance. So are the Cooper S/T S/TT or S/T-C , Interco's and Big O are good possibilities? Any other recommendations?

I have Bridgestone Dueler A/T D693 tires on mine and I love them. They hold up well in the rocks and are decent in sand (no mud or snow/ice to play in around here). So far they are holding up a LOT better than the Dunlop Mud Terrains I replaced. I went a bit smaller this time too, 265/75R16.

Can't stress this one enough, Have seen many tires on pinz, have had many types on my pinz too, the best tire bar none is the Super Swamper TSL Radial, 265/80R16's, just got back from having 6 new ones, Yeah it set me back about $1500.00 bucks, but since going to TSL's I have not had to chain up in the winter, and am never at a loss for traction in the other seasons, have a smooth quiet ride on the highway and get great gas milage.
Oh yeah the look totally killer on the truck too. See...
