Fuel mileage between 710 and 712
All things being equal, I would expect the 710 to get better MPG than the 712, but all the tech specs listings I've seen list them as being equal.
Seriously got the bug to get a pinz, leaning toward the 710, but the 712 size is also tempting. I guess the downside to the 712 is 50% more tire and brake costs, and I would expect somewhat poorer over-the-road fuel efficiency. Advantages are better traction, more capacity, and I suppose a bit more wicked looking?
Can anyone confirm real world mileage comparison between the two?
I am willing to trade an FJ80 in very good condition if anyone is interested.

I've had a 712W (with the taller than normal "ambulance" box) for 7years, and average 11 mpg with it. I've also owned a 710M for 4 years, it averages 14mpg. I have heard others that get better, but it starts and runs very nicely so I don't have any reason to mess with it.
There is a big "cool factor" in my mind to having a 6x6, you preference (and mileage) may vary.

difference in the drive ratios?
I was reading last night in another thread here, I think it was about the 4500 RPM indicator, that the top end speed of the 712 was lower than the 710 I guess because of a difference in the drive train gear ratios? So if you are going to use it a lot over the road, the 710 would have that advantage?
I think I read that the 712 topped out around 68mph and the 710 could go 70+MPH?

So, does that mean there is a difference in the final drive gear ratios, or is it just a recognition that you're thrashing a lot more metal around with a 6x6, so you need to take it a bit easier?

I LOVE my 712. I have to admit coolness factor was alot of it. The 6x6 is great! I am very pleased with it off-road. The additional room is great, also. It is going to hurt the wallet when I need new tires, though.
The 710 will run a bit faster on the highway. Of course you can always put a 710 gear box in a 712, but you'll loose power. Just depends on what you want it for.
There are fewer of the 712's out there, so re-sale value might be a bit higher on a 712 also.

Re: difference in the drive ratios?
Wow, driving my 710m with the needle buried to 110-115kph, I was told that I was only going about 65mph. The noise, gear whine, fan noise, and tire rumbling made it feel like was going about 120 mph. I can't imagine it going 74mph.trscott wrote:I think I read that the 712 topped out around 68mph and the 710 could go 70+MPH?

ambulance...
That 712 Ambulance looks like it would make a very comfortable removable camper. Looks like you could put camper jacks on the side and have an open bed truck or put a soft cover on it when you aren't using the camper. Maybe add some windows to the camper for light and ventilation, take one bed out and add a stove, sink, storage cabinet, etc.Jimm391730 wrote:I've had a 712W (with the taller than normal "ambulance" box) for 7years, and average 11 mpg with it. ...Jim M.
