Improving mileage?

I know there is a OD conversion out there for the transmission/gear box, but there has been some trade offs. I assume this OD conversion allows for higher speeds and improved MPG's?

I was wondering if there was another way that may keep the original gear ratio spread in the transmission and allow for greater MPG's by cruising at a lower RPM.

I think we all agree that the gearing in the Low gear range for offroad use is not to be altered. However the High gear range for regular onroad driving seems to be geared to low. Some have suggested that they don't use the first gear during regular driving due to it being to low.

I was wondering if the High gear set in the Hi-Low gear box could be bumped up in ratio so that we could cruise at 55-60mph at say 2500-3000rpm. This should improve our overall MPG's. I'm not talking about a big change just enough to keep the RPM's down to a reasonable level at cruising speeds.

Are there any gears available that could achive this, and is it possible?
Any gear/number crunchers out there that know what gears are needed?

I doubled my mileage by inflating my tires.

Don't laugh about airing up your tires... my truck feels like I'm towing a parachute behind me when the tires are soft.
Tuned engines + Correct tire pressure = No need to drill in wildlife refuges!

My MPG increased incredibly when I added the taller, 34" tires...

On top of that I saw increases when I swapped to synthetic gear oil and when playing with different ignition advances.

I was able to get almost 18 MPG with carbs and only 2-3 more when I swapped to EFI and got it dialed in..

when I got the truck it was getting 8 MPG..

Which tires (and size) specifically are you using, Jake?

34" Interco bias ply "swampers.... They were trashed after the first 15K, now with 24K on them they look like drag slicks :-)

Which 34" bias ply Swampers? The 34x10.5-16 LTB (http://www.intercotire.com/site36.php), or the 9/34-16 "Narrow S.S."(http://www.intercotire.com/site32.php)?
