Axle boots

The seam is supposed to be at 10 or 2 o clock position depending on rt or lf side.

The fit was real tight but I got them on. I replaced the two rear boots.
On another note there was a little oil that had collected in both boots. There as a little more in the left side boot than the right side.

Jim,
Just for the record, are you saying that the seam should be at 10 o'clock on
the right (passenger) side, and at 2 o'clock on the left (driver´s) side?
Also, I just wanted to reiterate what has been said many times before on
this forum: The split boots are really intended as a field repair, not a
permanent fix.
Brian, I have a wheel drive puller you can borrow when you decide to make
a more permanent repair. Oh, and a little oil in the boot is not unusual.

True, it's be said many times, but not the concenus of all. My belief, and of others, is to use the non split boot whenever the axle assembly is dissassembled. But, not if the only reason to break the axle apart is to replace the boot..... the "pinched" section of the axle can fatigue with repeated "flarings", and crack.
The boot is a dust cover to keep foreign materials away from the exterior moving surfaces of the swing axles, so unless you regularly like to play U-boat commander with your Pinz, the split boot is fine for most.
Each person's use is different, but I see no problem for use of a "Good" quality split boot. There were Indian knockoffs a few years back that did have problems and premature tearing, but I don't know if that had changed recently.
