"INGOLSTADT,DE- Audi AG announced today that it intends to sell limited edition versions of a high end "Pinzgauer" vehicle in a joint marketing agreement with Steyr Magna Fahrzeugtechnik AG (GRAZ,AT http://www.magnasteyr.com)

The release will be coordinated and co-marketed with Governor Arnold Schwarzeneger as advertising spokesman. The actor has long been an advocate of the noisy but capable Pinzgauers and is soon to be seen on the streets in the US in his own customized version.

Initial sales price is expected to be in the 55,000 Euro range, but may be higher in the North American market due to expected demand. Dealers are curently taking pre-orders in anticipation of the model's release.

The vehicles will be built on completely refurbished military chassis, and production has already started in the Graz location. The vehicles will be converted to modern fuel-injection to meet emissions standards. They will also have special ITO bars added to help lateral stability. Production of the new model is expected to use up the existing supply of surplus vehicles which is the core of the new vehicle."

What does ITO stand for?

Wonder if they will have disc brakes?

I guess my initial thoughts are:

Are these gassers or diesels

Will this mean spare parts will be available for a extended period of time or vanish into the production or these units. May increase the cost of spare parts?

Will this increase the value of our well maintained or refurbished units? They are going to sell a limited number of these for roughly $80-100,000.00 Takes Pinz ownership to a whole different level.

Great now any rich idiot can own one.

Fuel injection can refer to Gas or Diesel

Google: Diesel fuel injection

But you are probably right, in that they are most likely Gassers.

Not all that familiar with the mechanics of cars but wouldn't fuel injection be a step backwards for the diesel Pinzgauer?

Well, had to have some fun! :P

When I first released this a few years ago in the pinzgauer mailing list it was a bit too close to home.... the factory was calling everyone it knew to find out what the deal was. I had emails from Autoweek magazine, etc.

Luckily everyone had a sense of humor, even the Austrians had a chuckle once everyone knew what had happened. :-)

This was before the pinz rights had been sold (twice), and there was a movie coming out with Pinzgauers in it. At that time they were still refurbishing pinz's fairly often and apparently there had been internal discussion of marketing them.

There are some pretty good April Fool's items on jalopnik:

Have fun, and thanks for being good sports! :-)

As BAE Systems (http://www.baesystems.com/) owns the Pinzgauer product line now, I doubt this is a real story.

However, it would be nice to be able to drop the 710 off at the nearby Audi dealer for a tune up!

Alan, I wish you hadn't fessed up... I was collecting the names of all the posters to this thread, and offer them a fantastic deal on beachfront property in Iowa. :D

Also, only the rights to the TD Pinz were sold back in the '90s, before the factory was moved to the UK. MagnaSteyr never gave up the rights to the gassers. Automotive Technik could only manufacture 716/18s and sell parts for the Turbo Diesels....

Alan, Good one .. I was googling ITO trying to figure out what the heck it was.
I think it would be pretty cool if they came out with limited edition Pinz.

Isn't the hold up related to the final fuel injection tuning? :D
