selling my 1972 Haflinger - $16,000

Post by nelsonamen »

Texas title, always stored inside. This is a desert version with the air intake on the front of the vehicle. It is a 6 passenger extended length version.

Here is a Q&A list from another member. Feel free to post other questions. And I will post photos as space allows.

-Looks like the top is good for a pattern but Im assuming it needs remade ?
SOME OF THE MATERIAL IS IN GREAT SHAPE, BUT IT ALSO HAS MAJOR TEARS. I DO NOT KNOW IF IT IS SOMETHING THAT COULD BE PATCHED, REPAIRED AND RE-USED
-The paint appears to be the original - do you know if that is the case?
ORIGINAL FACTORY PAINT THROUGHOUT
-The car looks like it is partially disassembled maybe the fuel tank is removed in addition to the roof and possibly other parts? Could you elaborate on what would need to be reassembled?
JUST RE-INSTALL THE HOOPS AND REAR FACING SEATS AND IT WOULD BE COMPLETE
-Do you have any manuals or original literature that go with the car?
I HAVE ORIGINAL SHOP PARTS MANUAL AND SOME OTHER ADV MATERIALS
-Does the car have its original tools?
THE ONLY "TOOL" THAT COMES WITH THIS HAF IS THE HAND CRANK FOR THE ENGINE
-Were there any mechanical issues when you drove it 5 years ago?
RAN FINE. IT WAS A STRUGGLE GETTING INTO AND OUT OF REVERSE FOR SOME REASON. WORKED, BUT TOOK A FEW TRIES.
-I assume it needs a battery, maybe fuel tank cleaning?, Fluids etc Do the brakes still function?
BRAKES WORKED WHEN LAST DRIVEN AND PASSED STATE INSPECTION. BUT THAT WAS YEARS AGO. YES - NEEDS BATTERY AND FUEL SYSTEM CLEANING. I WOULD DIS-ASSEMBLE THE CARB AND CLEAN IT AS WELL.
-Are the tires fitted serviceable? Does the extra set of rims have tires? If so are they serviceable?
TIRES ON IT DRIVE FINE BUT ARE SLOWER THAN FACTORY SET. INCLUDES THE ADDITIONAL FACTORY SET OF RIMS AND TIRES. THEY ARE IN GOOD SHAPE.
-Is there anything missing?
NOT THAT I KNOW ABOUT
-Are any of the seats missing? It looks like they may need to be recovered?
SEAT COVERS ACTUALLY LOOK GOOD. MAY NEED SOME FIXING OR STITCHING, BUT I AN NOT A SEAT PERSON. GOOD CHANCE I HAVE ALL SIX SEATS
-What parts are included with the machine (a complete list is not necessary)
BASICALLY ALL THE STOCK FACTORY ITEMS, AND THE SET OF TUNDRA RIMS AND TIRES. AND THE TOW BAR MY STEP DAD MADE

Lots of questions as there is not much info posted other than someone’s question and answer session.
Do you have all seats and pads or no?
Does it come with all the parts shown in the 3rd last photo?
Rust?

Yes - - I have all 6 seats. The two rear facing seats are shown below. Cushions? - - most likely all, but not 100% sure.

Rust - - very minimal for a 50 year old machine. Please study the photos. That is the original factory paint.

Other parts - - - - only what originally came with the Haf from the factory. Plus extra set of rims and tundra tires. Plus the tow bar. Factory parts include the hoops, and the 4 doors (black in the photo). And the original fabric top.

I am selling my complete inventory of parts separately from the sale of the Haf. Includes a spare engine (looks new, but condition unknown).

Thanks for the questions,
Nelson (San Antonio, Texas)

Update - - - after sitting about 5 years, the engine did well. New battery (fits beautifully in the tray - I will keep the specs for the team here). Cold compressions (turning with dyna-starter after an oil change but before starting) were 145 and 146 psi. Not bad, but then again there are less than 5,100 miles on the clock. Good spark on both sides. New plugs. Completely went through carburetor (oh how I hate that ethanol - - it was like a white epoxy in the jets) and flushed the fuel system downstream of the gasolator. Then fed direct from an ethanol free gas container through an in-line filter. Starts and runs well. Drove 1/2 mile to my other hangar. Sweet.

Interesting change - - no problem shifting into and out of reverse. Like it never happened .... strange.

So, a good portion of my "restoration" will involve a bucket of soap and water to clean it up, then get a set of fresh Texas tags. And put the stock wheels and tires back on, and the roll bar, hoops, 5th and 6th seat, etc. And now ...... (as seen here many times) .... I am pondering my decision to sell. Will keep you all up-to-date as the weeks go by .....

Enjoy life, be safe,

Running well today. Starts amazingly well

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDAniXCBpis

Tried all 5 forward speeds and let the rpm limit governor kick in while in 3rd and 4th. Having the speedo in KM makes me feel like I am going fast...... Brakes work well (even parking brake) but I do not know if all 4 corners are working (will lock wheels on dirt road for a test). Cleaned up nicely (enjoy the photos). While switching the wheels I re-filled all 4 hubs - - they took about 1/3 quart each. Still need to flush tank and fuel line back to engine bay. Then oil check for the tranny and dif. And hit every spot of rust with CorrosionX treatment (aircraft rust preventative that works very well). Then install top and doors.

Kinda glad (for now) than someone did not step forward with a check last week. I am going to take it off the market for now. My "restoration" continues.

Haflinger doors - let me know if info needed

Post by nelsonamen »

I am still into my "restoration" (well ... ok ... buckets of soap and water, .... and PB Blaster). The doors show very little use and look factory new. Let me know if any of you need measurements or photographs of the doors, or the door components. It would be very easy for me to do at this point. Both for the front and back doors. Thanks for posting that pic, Nelson!

I've got to make some doors this coming spring, that pic helps immeasurably.

After "restoring" with the bucket and sponge (cleaning) work, last week I decided to spring for the big bucks ($1,950) and have a new top made. I give it a 6 out of 10, but it is sweet having a complete enclosure again! It runs like a champ, even has a steady idle now (finally). Ethanol free only, thank you ....

Enjoy the photo.
