Big Bend National Park
You can bring it, because it will be cheaper than buying fuel there. However, the day we did the pre-run we left Study Butte with a full tank and had over 1/2 a tank when we finished the trail. I started with a full tank and used about one gas can the whole time we were there.
All that being said, I too, will bring a couple extra cans anyway in case we do more cruisin'.
Think about a lawn chair or too if we stop for lunch and I think someone already volunteered and awning or something similar for shade.
If you have a laptop, there are a couple wifi hotspots inTerlingua/Study Butte and they might come in handy to review or share any pictures you might have taken.

Andy,
Are you guys headed out that way this weekend or next? I'm in Fort Davis the weekend of the 20th to 22th but riding (pedaling), not four wheelin'.
When you get to Study Butte, please do stop in at Far Flung Outdoor Center and introduce yourself to Greg Henington. He's an EMT, a local, a good friend of mine and a great resource for all of us for future Pinz outtings in the region.

We are scheduled for the weekend of 13, 14, and 15 June. Not this coming weekend, but the next weekend. Some of us will be arriving on the 12th and others on the 13th. The trail ride is scheduled for the 14th and everbody leaves the 15th.
Saturday evening we are tentatively supposed to gather at the Starlight theatre in Terlingua for supper and just goofing. If everyone gets in early enough on Friday we can get together before the trail ride and do the meet and greet thing while we cut up the plan so everybody is on the same page and more or less familiar with and at least knows the names, of the rest of the folks that show up before the trail ride.
Lots of liquids, broad brimmed hats, and sunscreen will probably be the order of the day for Saturday.
I will try to go by Far flung at some point, but I won't promise you that I will make it. I know where they are at on the south side of 170 to Lajitas and Presidio.

Imports are going to be imports. At the local pubs/cantinas you'll be paying a little extra because it's imported. Just like anywhere else.
If you want to cross the border, you will either have to go west about 80-100 miles to go to Presidio. There you can cross and go to Ojinaga (Oh he nah ga) Chihuahua, (just the like the dog) Mexico. You will be allowed 1 liter for personal consumption (still have to pay state alcohol tax) and any more than that you will be paying the duties. The next nearest port of entry would be Del Rio which is east quite aways.
The thing with going to Mexico. Remember, it is NOT the USA, you are a guest there. Most places on the border will treat you well and they all have someone there who speaks English. They won't shaft you on the exchange rate either, that is not good for the tourism business. I wouldn't buy from a street vendor, the quality control sometimes leaves a little to be desired. The shoeshine boys are still around, but their numbers are smaller. It's usually easiest to just say, No gracias.
The colorfully clothed women sitting on the sidewalk trying to sell you gum are Indians from the interior of Mexico. They have a pretty tough life for the most part and in days gone by were looked down on. Kinda like being an "untouchable" in India.
If you go, when you come back, don't play games. Declare any and everything you bought in Mexico. If you can't bring it in they will tell you and sometimes you have the opportunity to try to take it back. If you don't declare something and they find it, that is smuggling. Smuggling merchandise will get you a pretty good admin fine, smuggling drugs, will get you at least overnight in jail.
While I'm at it. Big Bend is a National Park. That means anything that happens there, no pun intended, will be a federal case.
If you've never had a federal speeding ticket this is your opportunity. Speed limit in the park is 45 mph unless otherwise posted and they have some young enforcement type rangers who look like they might be looking for statistics
You used to be able to cross the river at Boquillas in the park or at Lajitas, but after 9/11 that stopped.

I should be in sometime mid afternoon on Thursday. I have several "family freq" walkie talkies and should have a CB by then. I'm sure some of the other folks will also have some form of communication.
Mike Nims and crew, and my family will be at the Big Bend Motor Inn. It's right at the main intersection of Study Butte. Next door on the south side is the combination cafe, convienience store, and gas station. We could meet up there.
If I'm out Friday (which is probable) I'll leave a note with the desk as to about when we'll be back or if possible where we went. Bar, restaurant, bar, whatever.
I hope we have some wind, but nothing like what we have been having here for the last two days.
Looking forward to seeing everyone Thursday or Friday. Drive safely.

Shawn, right now the big powwow is for Saturday evening, at the Starlight Theatre in Terlingua, since we're not sure when all will be in. If we all hook up early enough on Friday we can do something Friday evening. Cell phones do work around Study Butte and Terlingua and I'm guessing Lajitas wouldn't be without. I think you have my cell phone number. I'll pm ya.
