Big Bend National Park
To check weather conditions in Big Bend try going to:
www.nps.gov/bibe/daily_report.htm.
That should show temps, highs and lows for different places in the park as well as any precipitation they may have received. The report is update once daily.
NOAA provides a forecast for the park, but the radar leaves much to be desired. The weather channel might have info also.

Andy there is a guy here in Boerne that just told me he is going with us. He is bringing 3 with him. He also mentioned the hot springs on the Rio Grande as a possible point of intrest. If you don't know about it email me and I will forward you his email.

Andy's Big Adventure starts at zero dark thirty Sunday. The graduation and one place that takes 3 days to feed (I gotta feed this place $$) have conspired to delay departure until Sunday. Right now I'm hoping for zero problems and a decent recon to report.
If that fellow, plus 3, wants to come that is fine. Email is coming.

Actually I'm blessed with a wife who isn't really hung up on that stuff. I even get off cheap on Valentine's. We are usually too busy for the Hallmark holidays. We had to go to the courthouse and get a second marriage license because we never got around to using the first one in the time allowed because we had too much going on.
I do pay for it all throughout the year though.

I am lucky also I have a great wife, she just likes nice things. Plus when she is happy I'm happy. The deck thing has only been on the to do list since August, I finally got around to doing it. The best presents for her are the ones I do, not the ones I buy. However she has one store I can go into and get just about anything and she loves it.

We are back. First the mundane stuff.
The first night we stayed at the Big Bend Motor Inn. That was like $103 and change for your basic room.
The second night we stayed at the Chisos Mining Company Motel. About 1 mile down the road to the west. That cost $ 69.00 and change.
Both have basic rooms. If you are seriously into TV plan on being on a very restricted diet. BBMI had a couple of more channels. BBMI also had queen size beds. CMCo was just a smidge nicer and the lady up front was nicer. There are a couple of other places around, but I can't comment.
The food at the cafe next to BBMI was okay, we just went there for breakfast. It's a small buffet. First day choice was pancakes, biscuits, scrambled eggs, bacon, and there was gravy for the biscuits. Today, they had the pancakes, biscuits, scambled eggs, hash browns, sausage patties, and gravy for the biscuits.
The first day we had supper at the Basin in BBNP. Great scenary, not crowded, but a little on the pricey side.
Yesterday's lunch was at Rio Grande Village after the pre-run. There's a convenience store with micro wave burgers and sandwiches etc. I'm not sure they will have enough stock for around 16 people, so we need to figure out what we want to do after the ride or if we want to pack lunch.

The pre-run. Glen Springs road was not bad. Basically a 2nd gear, sometimes 3rd, run with maybe only the rear diff locked once or twice. Speed for the most part was an easy 9-12 mph. But, it was just one truck.
Black Gap Road immediately started with the transfer case in low and both diffs locked going down hill. Once on the bottom of the short hill it was okay to take transfer case back to high and unlock the front. This is a pretty slow road for at least the first half. One real steep, long down hill and you actually have to drive the truck not guide it. No big rocks or anything to eat an oil pan.
There is one tight spot that is pretty rough just to get into it, but it can't be 200 yards long. After that it was mostly 2nd gear at about 10 mph or a little less.
The River Road is like a good graded county road most places, but there are some washes that have gulleys or dips in them and if you hit it too fast you'll bounce your passengers. The River Road was mostly 3rd and sometimes 4th.
Like I said GPS showed a total of 76 miles, but that includes about almost 30 just getting from Study Butte to the Glen Springs Road turn off and probably 8 to 10 from the River Road to Rio Grande Village. It took us a little over 4 hours from the time we left Park Headquarters until we got to Rio Grande Village. We stopped at the Mercury Mine for about 15 minutes, but didn't walk up to it.
I'm working on the pics. More later.
