I posted this on Robi's Pinzgauer Forum, but for those who do look at it, here are some pics of a local trip.

A few weeks ago I did a day trip with Robert Pepper (Journalist, author, photographer etc www.4wdhandbook.com | facebook.com/4WDHandbook )

Robert's writing an article for an overseas 4X4 Magazine on my 712 and he wanted to get some photo's of the vehicle in action.

The area is about 100km from my home so it wasn't too long till we were in the bush "playing". There are thousands of kilometers of 4WD tracks in Victoria, but this area has some good "medium grade" rocky tracks.

I've attached a few of the pictures he took on the day.

Beautiful Pinzgauer. Massive tires. What size are they?

Nice vehicle Peter - the Simex tyres look the goods with those side biters - I was considering those for my Landie 101 but decided the go for BFG MT KM2s. My main concern with the Simex was their onroad grip/wear etc. How have you found them.

I have been away in my 101 with some 4x4 Pinzgauers where they showed up some stability issues in rocky areas like you are in but I assume the 6x6 is a dream in that sort of country.

I do love the look of the Pinz, and yours looks great.

Cheers

Garry

The tyres are 35"X10.5"-16's, on standard Pinzgauer rims....they are fitted with bead locks.

I LOVE the Simex ET's (I used to run 34" Swampers and before that 255 X 85-16 BFG MT's) and they are the best off road tyre I've come across yet in mud and deep ruts, especially when aired down, but on road they wear fairly quickly (I'II be lucky to get 15,000 km out of them) and they are NOISEY!!!
Strangely enough, on road they handle pretty well, but there are four at the rear. I've done a couple of 100kph braking tests on "moist" roads over the years and they pull the vehicle up well, but just before you stop completely the tail tends to break loose.

I'm going to fit 255 X 85-16's BFG MT KM2's (Personally, I reckon they are one of the best on/off roads tyres on the market) to my 718, but it won't be used for hard/extreme 4WDriving, more outback touring etc.

I run 285x75x16 BFG MT/s on my P93 716 I think they are the best compromise tyre for off road ability and road manners.

I know this isn't really a tire thread, but can I ask a quick question?

I have a set of fairly aggressive retread/remould tires on right now. I spend more time on the road and I wondered whether the thrumming sensation I get when I drive (road speed dependent rather than engine speed) was due to the tires. They're called INSA turbo Saharas I think. I was tempted to swap them onto BFG Mud Terrain 2s but didn't want to spend the money if I wasn't going to notice a difference. The present set have loads of tread left so it would be an elective change, rather than a necessity.

Any thoughts from you BFG'ers?

Tony

The noise you're getting is allmost certainly down to the Insa Turbos, I've run BFGs for a good few years now on both petrol and TD Pinnies and I find I get good road mileage and grip as well as being quiet, they also perform great off road. I did once fit a set of Bronco Grizzly Claws and I now know why they are called that, they really growl at you on the road. :D

I have run BFGs old Mud Terrains and had a set of the new KM 2s I don't think that the new KM2s are that good. I would now go for Kumho KL71s

The best Tyres that I have run off road on the Pinnies, Land Rovers and Jeeps are Simex Jungle trekker 2s size 34-11.5

I have also tried the Simex extreme but found that they tended to dig in too deep and not so stable on tarmac, again back end sliding round a lot.

Peter you probably find them a bit more stable on your 712 than I did on my 4 wheelers.

Im currently running 255/85/16 but find that they tend to slip a little more on side slopes than the wider 285s

Im still looking for a tyre between the Simex (Hard to get in the UK and price) and General Mud terrains. The new Geolander Muds plus look interesting but they don't do them in 285/75/16
