Haflinger seal kits.. Any "pro tips?"

My Haflinger has moved out of my garage to be patched/welded/painted and whatnot.. But the motor needs TLC. It had a sizable oil leak coming from the left oil tube seals when I pulled it out.

I have purchased the complete SAV seal kit, but I'm in the dark as how I should do the install.

Can any of you give me tips on prepping seals/plugs, where and what type of sealant would be best, etc. I have been told to coat the oil plugs with grease before assembly to aid with seating and sealing.. ???

Any disassemble/reassemble tips would be handy, too.

Unfortunately, I'm operating under a bit of a time constraint as I have been diagnosed with cancer and will be starting treatment very soon, so I'm trying to be as proactive as I can with my Hafi project, and don't want to be into a forced "redo" situation.

I take it you mean an oil leak from the oil return tubes from the cylinder heads? The seal where the tube meet the crank case is just a press fit and clamped in place when you fit the cylinder head again.

It can be done with the engine in place as sliding the head outward till it hits the engine compartment walls gives enough room to get the seal in. - Do both seals at the same time. No point in just doing one as the other is likely to be hard and will leak when you put it back together.

As long as the surfaces are clean and have no damage on them, I don't think you need any sealant, but a belt and braces approach should hurt. Personally, I would opt for a non-setting mastic type sealant and just put a thin layer on things.

I think the biggest headache will be the tinware - It never comes off nicely or goes back on with out a lot of fiddling!

Engine is totally out, the tin is all removed. The kit (supposedly) comes with all the seals and gaskets for heads, oil cooler, oil tubes, intake, exhaust.

There are many schools of thought on sealant use and prepping seals and gaskets. I really want to know what has worked for others, especially since there are a few fellows on here that have done this many times.

When you put the rocker covers on - glue the gasket to either the head or rocker cover as this will stop it moving when bolting the rocker cover on. If the gaskets are cork - make sure you do not overtighten as the cork will squeeze out - gluing one surface also helps with this issue.

Glueing using Permatex #3, RTV or other?

Permatex aviation sealant for whole motor/chassis, same as Pinz.
Use sealant on the part you are bolting on, not the block/head sides.
Lube the silicone oil tube seals with a tiny bit of motor oil.

What Jim said because that is what I did
The 2 white seals with inner rubber (1 larger and 1 small) in your kit are for the crank (have to split the motor case to install). I did all except those and I am sure it will come and get me in the future but to do it you have to tear the entire motor down
Any others that your not sure of?

Yeah.. I ID'd the main crank seals. Mine appear to be ok.. So I'm not doing them..
