OK so I just got a bunch of parts for my hafi shipped to me from overseas. In that order I apparently ordered a set of suspension springs on accident (don't ask) anyway, I am now wondering if after 50 years it might not be a bad idea to change them out. Can someone tell me how I determine if mine are still good or are shot?

As for how to tell without removing - that I don't know.
I removed mine it is pretty simple and if you remove the strap and then droop the axle the spring basically falls right out.

Was thinking after I posted that you would know the length as you have new springs

I just thought there was a way to determine when they were on. I am doing most of my breaks this weekend so I may pull one and look or just shelf them until I do shocks some day.

My Haffie has heavy duty springs in the rear (from when it was a gold prospecting vehicle in the desert) and as a result the rear wheels point in substantially at the bottom and I only have a couple of inches of rubber touching the ground. As I have to get some new standard springs can I ask where you got yours and what sort of price.

They were $75 each and they came from John Hamilton in the UK.
I am willing to sell mine at cost if someone is interested.

Two ordinary coil spring compressors from your local car accessory shop will allow you to compress the spring(s) enough to remove them without having to take the check straps off.

Obviously, if you take the check straps off, you don't need the spring compressors as the drive shafts will drop far enough for you just to lift the springs off the holding pins on the bottom, after the top drops out of the top locating hole.

No spring compressor needed on any Haflinger suspension spring
Just pull the lower shock/strap bolt out and lift the body to unload the suspension, springs practically fall out

Rear springs are slightly thicker than the fronts, .59055" vs. .55118".
