Restoration Project -Parts and advice wanted

I just got in from a 1400 km road trip to collect a Haflinger project. It's dark now so photos will have to wait until tomorrow. I know I will need a manual, battery box and fuel tank if anyone has spares.

It also has no motor. (Unfortunately it was sold separately) I was toying with the idea of a BMW 750 series 5 or 6 bike engine. Any thoughts?

Off to do more inspecting with my flashlight. :D

Cheers, Clive

Cool
Ontario has to have one of the highest number of Haflingers!!!
Tell us what year, model etc did you get.
Engine conversion will be tricky and will require many mods to the engine bay, etc etc. But finding an original engine is a trick too!
Will be fun to follow your progress so keep us posted and post lots of pictures.
Not a lot of spares out there so you will want to look to Dale at HaflingerTechnik, Robert Prokschi and Scott at EI
PM me for manual info
Cheers,
Dan

BMW bike engine would need at the very least some sort of cowling and fan system to provide cooling air as it was never designed to go in a box of an engine compartment.

Then there is the even more fundamental issue - does it turn in the correct direction? Pretty sure it does, but you should check before you go any further with those thoughts.

Good luck

John

I bet the Isetta motors like Mr. Vecchiarelli used in that Hafi are getting almost as rare as an ACTUAL S-D-P Unit.

True... and more $ thanks to Weiner!
Hey is that BMW powered Pathfinder on the Facebook page - time to add another (and add 63Rovers as he just picked up a Pathfinder too)!

The challenge with many engines is that the sump hangs down to much - reducing ground clearance. The starter is the other issue.

I bought a Haffy which had a 1300 subaru stuffed in it - I pulled it out as it was way to big and the starter issue wasn't solved. I don't think it actually ever ran successfully. Lots of cutting up of the rear.

The best motor I saw photos on in a haffy was a MotoGuzzi V2 engine - air cooled with integrated starter and lots of clearance. For a motorcycle engine it has much more torque than others and is a compact engine.

I'll try to dig up some photos I have of one competing in euro "trials" competition that also was setup with 4 wheel steering - very cool...

Heres a trial's haffy:

Here's one out of South Africa I think with a VW motor - the body was lifted as well. Notice the dual exhaust...

Fiat Panda motor haflinger (ugh)

Here's another one from indonesia - but the suspension is totally different as well.

If you read the thread referred to, you will discover that the engine is in fact a BMW 700 flat twin engine and not the engine fitted to the Isetta which was a vertical single cylinder 350cc air cooled engine.
Getting a BMW 700 would be as difficult as getting an original Haflinger engine. It would probably be easier to find a Puch 500 engine as fitted to the cars and get that turned into a big bore engine for use in a Haflinger.

Any body looked at the current Fiat 500 to see if that engine could be used?

John

The current Fiat 500 uses an inline water cooled engine - so its not an ideal type of engine to use. They do have a 2 cylinder "multi-air" version but it is tall and has a deep crank / oil sump:

http://www.motor.com/newsletters/201009 ... inAir.html

It is a sweet engine - 875 cc / 85 hp / 155 nM @ 2000 rpm / 85 kg - but it wouldn't really fit

Lots of great ideas, thanks.

I've also been looking at the air cooled Subaru v-twin and other industrial engines along the same line. All include built in starter, alternator and even fuel injection. The issues would be setting up a clutch and mounting the engine to the bell housing.

Lots to consider.

1) Dick's Hafi is a Canadian unit.
2) Photo required :)

Re:#2) yes agreed as I have a bad habit of making the Canadian ones into Pathfinders

Ok! Ok! I get the hint. Here are the first photos complete with a little Montreal snow.

The wide tires had to come off to fit the trailer.

If I save my pennies maybe a can rent a ride in the tracked beast some day!

Afraid the Rover got jealous after getting us home safely and now will chew up tomorrow evening with a fraying serpentine belt. There really is a reason the Rover in the Gods Must be Crazy was called the anti-Christ. What can you expect from a Rover with carpets?! The 63 will haul it to the wrecker one day!

The snow did melt by the time we got home.

Cheers, Clive

PS Dan, any idea of the model and age? It has no number plates and I haven't found the frame number yet.
