Rear backing plate damage...

Post by TechMOGogy »

Any reason to replace or just leave it as is?
Either PO or I hit a rock at some point!

It will be ok, I've seen bigger missing lip sections with no problems.

I have a similar problem with mine. JB Weld is great for building up old castings.

Use an Epoxy resin to remake the lip to help keep the rubbish out when you go off road. Not actually required for the wheel or brake to work, but definitely helps keep the brake shoes clean!

Structural integrity is not compromised, and I don't think any more dirt will get into the brake drum area. A JB Weld patch would work.

Here is mine after my front wheel fell off.

The price of a new backing plate was such that it was not worth replacing so I used epoxy steel to repair - the first one came off when I put the brake drum back on but my second go worked fine and is still there.

The brake drum which I did replace, but actually worked fine.

Aahh. I was wondering if maybe there was some kind of lesson there about certain rims or tires that dont fit well.
Must have been scary when it happened.

I had been offroading all day and a knocking had started much earlier which I thought was the steering arm on the steering box banging on the front bash plate in rough going. Also at the time I had a dodgy bearing in the front end but didn't know where so I thought the knocking could have been that.

On the way home the knocking got worse and I thought it was definitely a wheel bearing but then when I was going around a gentle right hand bend the front left wheel came off - it rolled down the road beside the car matching its speed as I slid along on the wheel brake drum. When I stopped the wheel was only a few feet away and looking for the wheel nuts I only found two and just pulled a wheel nut off another wheel so two wheels only had 3 nuts on.

Not sure why they came off - none of the other wheels were loose and it had been on all day but obviously loosening as the day went on. I can only assume they were not correctly tightened in the first place.

Interestingly where I came to rest there was a Landcruiser parked just down the road and the guys came to help but they had more problems than me as they had damaged their steering when offroad and could only either drive straight or turn right and there was a left hand bend ahead so they were backing up so they could point their car in the right direction to get around the left bend - we were pretty remote on the only sealed road in the area - then along came an interstate police highway patrol car who offered help but was waved on. Interestingly he was out of his jurisdiction (different state) and a good 50 miles from any highways - he must have driven over the mountains which is 100km of tight winding unsealed logging roads that are very potholed and corrugated. I guess he was heading to Canberra's smaller satellite city, Queanbeyan which is across the border. When driving the Haffie I dont like cops as they tend to not understand basic vehicles like the Haffie and even though you are legal they can cause grief - but this one was outside his jusrisdiction so not an issue.

Anyway - I digress - I have never had another incident of loose wheel nuts.
