How strong is the drive line? 1987 718 P90

Hypothetically, how much power could the driveline in a 718 handle?
My D24t popped and i want to put a more powerful engine and transmission in it.
How much power is too much?

I wouldn't hazard a guess at what power the TD driveline can handle but in my opinion the weakest link is the transfer case, so that's what I'd be worried about in any repower project.

From what I remember, the original driveline was rated for a max of 140ish HP. Though there are differences, I wouldn't expect the TDs for any more.
One of the big reasons for a auto trans in a TD is to be able to control the torque being thrown at the drivetrain... if you don't like the cost of the VW engine, you definately won't like the cost of an outer axle assemby for a 716/18.. or the wait if you broke one.
And for engines, the last Pinzes were using a VW 2.5TDI engine

I have some notes somewhere that I'd have to refer to be confident but the P93/5 cylinder diesels were approaching the limit of what was possible with the existing Pinz drivetrain. Hence the very significant changes being considered for Pinz 2 which had 400Nm+ torque/150kW in 6 cylinder form.

Off the top of my head, the transfer case was one of the components near the limit - as already mentioned the automatic gearbox helps a lot to prolong drivetrain life - but different things go pop first depending on whether you're looking at high cycle fatigue or big torque reversals. Of course if you're not interested in long term durability and/or have a light right foot you can get away with pretty much anything that fits in the existing space envelope for a while!

It certainly was! Then again the original isn't exactly a Ferrari is it?

...besides Ferrari, hmmmmmmmmm, now if you'd said Aston Martin DB9 :D
