BIGGER MORE AGGRESSIVE TIRES ON MY ALASKAN PINZ
BIGGER MORE AGGRESSIVE TIRES ON MY ALASKAN PINZ
THANX TO MY SON WHILE I'VE BEEN AT WORK HE GOT THESE ON. FEW MINOR MODS WITHOUT NEEDING TO GET LONGER STUD BOLTS.....SINCE I COULD NOT FIND THEM. SIZE 35X13.5X16 ON 10 WIDE WHEELS

true design wheels in Denver http://www.truedesignwheel.com/index.html
i did not want to trash my original wheels so they made a flat center , then had to make spacer for behind that. well that only left me 4 turns of the nut on stud
they said it would be enough but I was not comfortable with that.
i tried to locate longer studs with no luck. so i had the spacers machined down a little (here in Alaska) and with different lug nuts my son got it to work but not ideal.......if i was to do it again i would have original centers put in or locate different wheels that fit like original.
i am new at the pinzgauer world and was on time crunch to get wheels before i left Denver area to get vehicle north. previous owner had these tires on original 6-1/2 " wheels. tire manufacter recommended 10-12 wheels for these so i wanted them switched before i left to save shipping costs on custom wheels.

After putting big meats on, how's the steering effort? 2nd question, what's the largest tire you can put on the stock wheel? I have 255/75/16s, and I pulled the tire off of the bead today by lowering the pressue to get into my garage. It looks like a larger/wider tire would work ok on the stock rim.

I run 285/75R16's without problems on stock rims, and I have seen 305/70R16's on stock rims too (that may be a little too wide). I routinely air down to 18psi and have yet to lose a bead (Now I'm in for it...).2nd question, what's the largest tire you can put on the stock wheel? YMMV.

the guy i bought this from ran the 35x13.5x16 on stock rims and aired them down without problem i don't recall how low. Patrick at CWR recommended 285x75x16 for the stock wheels. i have not driven it yet ( @ work 800 miles north of my toy) but my son says the steering is not much different but lacking some HP.

Lacking some HP? If it's noticiable, that's pretty bad considering the awesome power Pinz's have to start with.AK NIMROD wrote:the guy i bought this from ran the 35x13.5x16 on stock rims and aired them down without problem i don't recall how low. Don't have to worry about it for a few months. The tires I have are the old style BFG Muds, and the tread blocks are starting to chunk off from playing in the rocks.
Big Tires!!
I love the way they look!!
I want to get 36 12.5 16.5' on my Pinz but haven't had the time and was worried if they would fit.
Any problems with them so far?
How is your clearance in the wheel wells?
Thanks
Chuck

CHUCK, well i have not seen it in person since they were put on by my son, he said there may be a little contact on a tight right turn with the fuel tank? i won't see it until about 8 march. 800 miles away at work
so i can not tell you how much clearence there is.

well when i was home to took the Pinz to Los Anchorage (150 miles each way) had a hunter ed. workshop to attend over the w/e . my son had installed the new sea level jets the night before i left. and then remember he had saiid there was decrease in get up and go with big tires and 10 inch wheels. well i noticed it and after about 50 miles seem even worse I was in the mountains bt then and slowing to 30 mph max on hills and 47 on flat ground on straight aways. started hard next morning like battery was low but caught and other than seeming increased white cloud ( below zero temps) until it warmed up seemed to run fine. second morning hardly started and was again maxed at 47mph ( 43 + correction for big tires) long trip home and did not want to idle. next morning at home was hard to start, died when i gave it gas and would not restart. well that evening my son looked at it and immediated noticed that the linkage for the front carb was missing.
he made a replacement from threaded rod and got it running. wow what a difference having both carbs working made. got to 55-60 mph without any problem......just a little slower to get there than with smaller tires. i'm suprised after it vibrated loose that it even would run.
BEAUTIFUL DAY ON THE DRIVE HOME EVEN IF IT WAS SLOW.
