Bryan stole my guess: iced up carbs/intake.

And don't worry about the creamy gunk in the oil. Just part of the Pinz charm. They don't get hot enough to burn off the moisture that condenses in there. You end up with oil snot looking stuff. Don't see it in the summer.

I'm betting the radiator didn't boil over and allow the engine to overheat.

Jerry, your air filter is probably frozen over. If it gets wet and then freezes, it won't pass air, and the engine sucks oil up into the air box over the carbs, which then swallow the oil and BELCH blue smoke. Remove the air filter and try to start it. NAPA sells a replacement, though it isn't always a stock item, and I don't know the #. I'll try to get it and post it along. You might need to clean the oil out of the air box to decrease the smoke at first. poop, sorry, I thought I'd told you all I could remember.

So I will go with the frozen air box... but lets think about how that happened? Is the flexible air pipe leading from the heat box ripped, torn, or not connected so you were not getting any of that pre-heated air from the heat exchanger? That led to frozen things. Surprised the carbs did not freeze up and when you let off the throttle it kept going, and going, and .... you get the ghist.

So lets continue the trip. Now it gets real interesting. So I get it fixed thanks to Dennis. Paul I think you told me as much as you could in the short time we had together. Call me nuts, but I love a good adventure. They say the best experience is someone elses and then you can learn from it...or NOT.

Also an old cowboy saying...Good judgement comes from experience and experience comes from poor judgement. Not sure where I stand yet.

The guys at Helwig really did a good job getting her ready that's another clue..so it wasn't a bad hose or anything....

So here we go.....

After Dorothy and the rest of the gang saved me from the big bad witch in Kansas (that would be dennis - Mr OZ) it was just a long long long drive.

Side note: - Things you replace in the PINZ..my 2.5 cents worth and it's not much yet especially in Canadian money.

Dennis told me when I was looking for a Pinz and I think there were some others too that said just buy it and run it for awhile before you start doing stuff to it. I now know what you were talking about. \

LIGHTS: The lights that are in it are great.

WINDSHIELD: The winshield seems just fine

HEATER: I am getting the heater replaced, but I was amazed at the heat that I was getting out of it the stock way....now it needs to be a bit more at minus 15 or colder, but I was bundled up coming from My Horeb in the storm and I stayed comfortable if I rubbed my legs a bit. I could have closed up the back too, but heck I was still trying to figure out how all the stuff worked. In the dark it was pretty crazy. Couldn't tell how much fuel I had just a light in the Speedo. So I think I will add some kind of cab light cause I think it would be handy. I used my flashlight so I was ok. Kept it on the heater to keep the batteries warm. Also snow was gathering on the windshield, but I just stopped and cleaned it off.

24-12 converter: Need this to keep the MP3 charged up. It did good for about 8 hours and then went dead so that was good and that would be a good day for a normal SANE person, but I am far from that. I put in a 18 hour shift from KC.

WINCH AND BUMPER and rear hitch adapter: All ready on it looks great. Haven't tried the winch yet..tomorrow maybe do a dry run. The guy I pulled out had a tow rope and I got him out and was in the process of pulling the other guy out, but the state trooper told me to leave it so i would get rear ended. Not used to seeing so much traffic. If you get 50 cars you pass in the winter at that time of night in that kind of a storm in the Yukon you would be lucky.

BACK TO THE TRIP:

The continuing story of a man who has gone to the dogs.....just kidding. Having a blast even at 50 MPH. I was amased at the ride of the Pinz. I thought it would be real rough but it ride better than the old 3/4 ton ford I used to have.

Oh I have to tell you about the headphones. Got them ready added the battery and being a very excitable person I tend not to read instructions....DUH. So I put them on and drive with the MP3 player on and without throughout the trip. Well don't you know..and don't get ahead of the story here ok.

I pull into get gas and I finally had some light. Well I look at them real close. They have a switch on 'em. I pushed it up  a green light came on  . I tried them again..^#^#^%$*%$*%#..can't believe I had driven all that way and never had them on  . I thought they were good before. They are unbelievable when they are ACTUAL ON   STUPID ME..just in a hurry. Slow down and smell the roses right...righhhhhhhhht.

SORRY OFF TRACK AGAIN

Anybody still reading???????

I got here to Denver last night at 2 am. I left KC at 7:30 am...long friggin trip at 50 MPH. 1983 KMS since Mt Horeb......

So I am looking for a place to get something to eat and then a hotel for the night. So I pass one and then I pull a right to go around the block back so 3 rights and I'm there..easy right...well!!!!!

I pass by a cop on the side road just as I turned the corner. He was just parked in a parking spot. So I get to the next corner and turn right..he pulls out behind me with his lights OUT. Thinks he's in stealth mode I guess. Now picture this. It's 2 am in a PINZ. Do you think you get noticed (how many vehicles are on the road). Then I have a yellow flashing light on the back that Paul put on for me for the fog and just as a general safety THANG.

So I take the nest right back to the main road..here he comes and my stomach starts doing back flips. I am pretty punchy and hungry. I have put in a heck of a day so far.

I pull into the diner and he pulls up behind me and blocks me (now don't get ahead of me yet ok..remember this is MY STORY

So on comes the lights. Now being from the YUKON I jump out and start walking towards him. I reach inside my pocket for my WALLET. Now I am from a place where you CAN'T have a handgun period unless you give up your first born and the rights to any lottery winnings in your lifetime.

NOT A GREAT PICTURE BUT HE TOLD ME TO KEEP MY HANDS ON THE WHEEL
Image

He yells from door of the car. Hey mister take your hands out of your pocket slowly and put them up, turn around and place them on the vehicle. Then he comes up and tells me to put me hands behind my head and frisks me (well I am pretty punchy from the drive and I am tired and very hungry). So start laughing cause he tickled me. Not a good thing to do I guess (pretty rough part of town I found out later - hell they have a push button key pad on the washrooms of the resturant.

So he asks for some id and registration etc. Well I reach for the keys and he freaks. Says "keep your hands where I can see them". I told him I need to get the keys so I could open the doors to get the info he wanted.

YES MY PINZ ACTUALLY LOCKS UP BONUS. Then I explained to him that I didn't have perminent stuff yet cause I was driving it home. Well I had to explain everything about the trip even to where I bought it etc.

After about 1/2 hour (probably about 5-10 minutes) he comes and said sorry and I was free to go. I guess there was a Pinz stolen

NOW GET THIS:

He said the it was the same make and model.. The one that got stolen was a 6x6 with a canvas top and double doors on the back.....don't know about you, but mine is not even close to that.

I would have been madder had I known that the vehicle was a 6x6 in the first place, but at the time I thought he would at least have an ACCURATE desciption of the vehicle before pulling me over and giving me a heart attack..NUTS. Now I realize why he took all the precautions cause it's a tough neighbourhood so I will cut him some slack, but do you think I would have a yellow flashing light on a STOLEN vehicle...dunno.

Anyway...my Pinz is at Dennis's shop and I have to get some sleep ok.

Jer Bear - over and out for now. KINGPINZ (Mike Kinsey)- is meeting up with me later and we will see what goes on there.

GREAT TRIP SO FAR..MY KINDA ADVENTURE ........REALLY :D :D :D

Hot for me, but warm for these folks - I think it was in the high 50's yesterday or close. Nice though. I want to get out and see some of it, but my Pinz is getting fixed up right now and won't be ready until later today.

I am going to the 3D archery range here. Mike Kinsey (kinspinz)will give me details later. Spent some time with him and his buds last night...great guys.

He was meeting some friends and wanted to know if I wanted to come....duhh ..YEAH I am in. So they wanted to take me to Hooters. I had never actually been to a Hooters and he was STUNNED. So Mike came and picked me up at the hotel and off we went. There was something happening there so we couldn't get a table so I still don't know what all the fuss is about (maybe if I was early 20's to 30's and single) I might have been climbing the walls. Not taking anything away from Hooters....just that much flesh when your married is like being hungry and watching a guy cook a steak  .

We ended up at another place and had some drinks and a meal and we told some lies and shared some stories. These guys are hardcore Pinz owners which was awesome cause they shared some great stories and trips and TIPS etc. I think they think I'm crazy though. Oh well that's the majority of people. I try to think outside the box and I cal a spade a friggin shovel, but seemed to fit in ok.

I think I will be continuing my trip sat morning so look out mr McCall Pinz I am headed your way. Want to see this place during the day. Denver has it all I think...crazy scared cops...scary neigbourhoods, GREAT PEOPLE and MOUNTAINS...very important to me..I could live here, but I would have to live out a ways I think.

Well gotta eat and then I am off to the shop to see the progress.

Have a great day ok. Sure am sorry we missed each other. From what I have witnessed so far the Pinz gang are some of the nicest, kind, gregarous, hard working fun loving warm ( oh christ there I go again) people on the planet..kinda like yukoners but with guns  .

CONTEST UPDATE: Some real close answers out there. I will check back later and we will get the names together and draw the winner at Dennis's shop.

Yup, still reading. Gosh, what a wonderful rambling story. Love it. Kind of reminds me of my trip back with my Pinz...but my trip was non-eventful except for the loss of my speedometer about a third of the way home. I just wrote down the km at the point of death, then added 'em later when the unit was rebuilt! Enjoy the Idaho portion Jer Bear, my original home.

RESULTS OF THE CONTEST:

NOBODY GOT IT ACCEPT DENNIS:

75 - pinz - nope
erik - nope
Critter - clogged air intake - yup but WHY??
Todds112 - No ice in the intake, but you wouldn't no the temp - Like erik said too WARM
Undysworld - Closest - Iced up filter.

It was actually just the filter. Not sure if it was clogged , but Dennis guessed it was a FRAM AIR FILTER period...Doesn't like them in the Pinz..not sure what he is getting me, but I will post it later.

Anyway I will enter in the contest...

I will get Dennis to draw the winner tomorrow. He still has a few things to tidy up but she's close. Have the heater mounted, 12 voly accessory mounted, 2 converters - one for the heater and one for accessories. tail lights are done and he is going to put a map light in for me tomorrow.

He has to fix the 24 volt shut off too..not working.

Then we will flash her up and check the heater and he will see if he needs to add some more vents in the front be the feet.

So I will announce the winner tomorrow and then I will need some contact info

Had a great day today - warm here and Linda drove me out to Bear Creek where I could shoot my bow. Funny to shoot when you are the only trad guy there.

So I will continue on my way tomorrow..McCall pinz I am on my way.

Going to dinner with dennis and linda and savanah in a few minutes so I have to go.

I'm totally lost on that one. Why does a Fram oil filter cause that? Haven't heard that one before. But definitely worth knowing.

Too bad you're not headin up this way, the weather has been awesome. Tetons have looked great, 9,000 elk on the refuge, lots to see!

Anyway, Hope the rest of the trip is fun, exciting, but uneventful.

Be Safe!
