Hi, i am new here.

Post by benztech »

Hi my name is Dennis, i live in Toronto and i have recently discovered that besides unimog and g-wagen there is something really cool...712k, i have sold my g500 and now i am really interested to find out more about this truck, i hope it will fit in my condo :)))) if not then i will get 710k or another place to live he he. I am thinking to have 712 as a regular vehicle , drive to work, offroading etc. i was reading this forum for 2 weeks and it seems like this truck are reliable but the age of 25-35 years not helping much.
Also i was wondering if anybody imported pinz himself or with help of a local broker. In Canada i found 2 big dealers one in BC and in Montreal.
P.S. sorry for my broken english my native language is russian.

Check with www.pinzgauercanada.com

I remember seeing that logo on Denis' 710K when he was traveling through US and we met in Moab. I think they do work on them as well as selling.

Hello and welcome. Since you're coming from a G500, skip the gaser 710/12s and go with a newer 716 0r 718 Turbo diesel. :D In Canada, vehicles only need to be at least 15 years old to import... only in the US do they need to 25 years or older.
It would be a small fortune, but about the same as going from a G230 to the G500. :D

Cheers
Dave

PInzgauer Canada has 710k for 18k not too sure if it is reasonable, maybe...
I thought of 718/716 but 40-50 grand i am not too sure about that.
710k or 712k is better for me also i have w123 diesel 300dt as a future donor for the motor and maybe seats and i do have 4 295-75-16 bfg of my g500 with bush bars etc that i want to install on 710 or 712
by the way does anyone know if g500 bolt pattern is the same ?
Actually i wanted 230g instead of g500 after half a year, way too much electronics for off roading, great power, looks cool but always afraid to scratch it during mud bogging/off roading.

The bolt pattern on the G are the same as the 716/718, NOT the 710/12.
Are you sure your G wheels are 16", and not 15's?
Though 295s have been fitted to Pinzes before, I feel they are too wide and heavy for the gasser.
I don't know how much you have learn on Pinzes, but major components on the gas and TD Pinzes do not innerchange, nor can you change gearing in the diff, portal or tranfer cases, and you need a high RPM diesel to keep them hiway roadable.... and if you find a suitable transmission, be sure that the tailpiece doesn't require shortening the cardon shaft any further... the angle between the trans and T cases are already hard on bearings. The TDs have larger wheelbases, and the cardon shaft is longer on both the automatic and manual tranny models

We have leased a G500 I can tell you first hand It's nothing like the 500. If you're looking for a brinks clown. As several friends told me the 500 looked like you will be disappointed. About the only thing the pinz has on the 500 is the wow factor and it's off road ability. Shortly after your friends find out the pinz is worth a mere 15k the only thing you have is the off road thing.

Hey, first thing i did when i bought my G i installed 16 inch rims not 22's,
and to me it does not matter what my friends think, if they not going to like it then it is too bad :))) cause i do like the fact that pinz does not have any leather or electronics that could go wrong. I am mechanic myself and let me tell you i was fixing that g500 for over 1 year and i still was not happy with it, i am not saying that it is not reliable or it will leave you on the side of the road, just lots of small things like door panels loose window regulators etc. Yes id does look cool, but i think 500 is way over engineered for what it is.So going backwards from overpriced G to pinz is not an issue at all. Also getting 716 is not the right time for me with this economy crisis right now.

Rims are 16 inch ATIK's winter tire package rims of g500, what is the difference between bolt pattern, is it id of the rim or bolt patern ? rims could be machined to match also. I was thinking to stick a 617 td engine in 712 or 710 k maybe engine could be moved forward to compensate for drive shaft length, but then again it is hard for me to say i have never seen engine bay of the pinz, some pictures showing some space in the front where turbo prop fan is. I have access to machine shop and custom fabrication garages so will see i may even leave that gasser engine alone, just drive it.

You really need to see the complete drivetrain before getting wild visions of major mods. Too many people have assume the the TD is just a new powerplant in the same body, along with it diffs and t case. The 716/18 drivetrain is a mirror of the gassers with the engine/trans on the left side of the central tube , instead of the right, and same with the T case's input. These engines are all of a slant design.

In my earlier days of Pinz ownership, I thought it would be fun to install a Toronada 455 and transaxle midship in a Pinz.
It would sure be fun the light the tires off the line!
There was a wheel standing Nomad station wagon locally with that combination in it, back in the late '60s and through the 70's 8)

The 710-12 rim is 5-160 and the 716-18 is 5-130 bolt pattern. The complete axle off the td will fit the gasser just is expensive about five grand an axle. But in the end you have disc brakes instead of drums.

The gasser motor has plenty of power if tuned properly. If you need more you could always build to the 2.7l.

Disc brakes and EFI seem to be the biggest improvements I have seen with the pinz.

There is a chance that h&r makes a bolt-on hub spacers/adapters from 160 to 130, i know i bought 4/30mm thk of them for my gwagen rims to extend wheel base, handling was greatly improved and they are tuv approved it is like dot standard in Canada. Now i just have to measure my underground parking to see if 712 will fit :)
