Good Morning;
I am a new owner of a 1974 710M that I hope to be receiving in the next 2 weeks or so. I have been lurking on this site for a few weeks and look forward to participating. Looks like there are some great trucks on here with some very talented owners.
Anyway, hopefully I have no issues registering and titling the vehicle here in New Jersey. I had a heck of a time with my Ural and hope I get a logical person at the DMV!

Another fellow Ural owner; it must be true that there is something that attracts Ural people to Pinzgauers and vice versa. There are a few Ural owners on here on here already, welcome to the forum.

Frigging Ural’s, why anyone would want such a funny looking motorcycle is beyond me and a 2006 at that.
On licensing the Pinz read past posts regarding registering and insuring, remember do not describe your 710m as a one ton truck or as a military vehicle, it is a passenger vehicle just like any other SUV.
Don’t know if NJ will require seat belts in the back or not at the time of inspection if one is required.
If I remember there are a couple of Pinzgauers already in NJ “dirtgum” is the only one I can think of right now, you may want to PM him for advice.

Forgot to add that the pinz was previously titled and registered in Idaho so hopefully it won't be an issue in NJ. The issue I had with my Ural was that "Ural" wasn't an approved "make." Once I got the approved list, I saw that IMZ was the "make" with a note next to it to also accept Ural.... Guess I had to do their job for them!

If it is previously registered in a state, I would just go for a re-register and don't try to describe it at all. Just smile be polite and hand them the
old registration and ask to have it registered in NJ. Of course you have insurance and a DL for NJ, right?
I have gone from CA to WA to CO without any issues except for WA and all they wanted to know is how much it weighed. Had to take it to a moving
company and use their scales to get a weight as that is how WA judges how much to charge.
When I bought it from Scott he did the CA registration for me as part of the sale...nice to have someone in your corner for the red tape things.

I just registered my 1986 718 in the wonderful state of NJ. You will need to take a picture or tracing of the VIN as the european VINS send up a red flag because the year of manufacture digit doesn't coincide. Once they see the tracing or pic, everything goes smooth. I am not far from you, send me a PM.

The TD's VIN is to Euro ISO confinguration, not a US, that's how some states can stop registering a graymarket car. Your tenth digit is a 1 for LHD, the DMV would figure it for a 2001. And it is nowhere close to what the 710/12 numbers are like.

Waiting to hear the DMV story.
Here you have to have both state inspection (which includes certification of VINs for out of state transfers) and insurance before you show up at the DMV. Both of those were move of a gyration than the DMV. While the insurance may just be proving you have a policy in general if I recall what it says, I've always showed up with the the vehicle in question already covered.
Best of luck - saying less is probably best. I have come across DMV folks that appear to intentionally want to make you jump through hoops and others that prefer to move you quickly through the queue and out of their hair forever.

When I registered the 718 at the NJ DMV, I wrote in 3 under number of axels. The lady then crossed it out and wrote 2, I told her it had 3 and she said that must be wrong. I then showed her a picture on my phone, which she took to her supervisor. She came back with the phone, pointed to the front axel and said "we are not going to count this one". At that point I just shut up and walked out with a NJ title and registration.

The three axles is why my insurer, State Farm, requires that I have my 712 insured as a commercial vehicle, even though it's not a commercial vehicle. It doesn't cost more, a few dollars less actually, but I hate the unnecessary confusion and complications.

When you get around to insurance I found that State Farm, which had it for a while, (and Amica) was quite a bit more expensive for me than Hagerty. Hagerty was less than half. If you can deal with Hagerty's criteria, which includes stating that it is not used for off road, and it is stored in an enclosed garage, another daily driver and other ins, it might help your budget. All went smooth today and received my title. I have sent off paperwork for registration as a historic vehicle. Fingers crossed!
