Gradually downsizing my fleet... the Pinz seems to be next

Post by bassman2 »

I hate to admit it, but I buy too much stuff and have had too many cars. 11 to be exact.

Over the last two years I've slowly begun selling off cars that I just don't drive or can't justify. It helped having a son turn 16 and me realizing my insurance bill would be insane.

I started off selling a 2006 H1 Alpha, then a 355f1 Ferrari, then my prized 1968 GT500 shelby. I diverted the money into investments that I needed to make for the long run... Now I've got two more project cars, that I'm not really working on, AND my '73 712 Pinzgauer.

I bought the Pinz from T-Lo's back in 2010. I came to me super clean with a bunch of extra work done by Thilo before delivery. I probably paid too much based on what I'm seeing some go for these days... $26k, but I did't care at the time. It's fun to drive, but I've only driven it a handful of times. The only thing I've done is keep it clean, stored in a heated shop, added seat belts in the back, and started it every so often. I'd feel confident driving my 712 anywhere, any distance, so long as I had a good coat!!

Now I think it's time to move on and get something my younger son can drive around in a few years. What do you guys think a good asking price should be if I post an ad locally? I ask because I really don't know what the market is like right now.

I'd think around $9-10,000 would be right. :D :D :D :D :D (from a guy who really wants a 712) :D

Honestly though, without pics and more details of your specific truck, it's hard to say.
I get the impression your truck is pretty much stock (?)
Probably something sub-20k would be my guess

Looks nice and looks stock from the pictures but hard to really tell as pics are small and no detailed description.
I would say start in the low $20's but it all depends on condition, add-ons, who is looking to buy right now, etc (there has been a couple 712M's for sale for a while now $24,500 and one for $15k but they have not sold as far as I know but then I don't really know full story/condition on them).
Best to put it in the Classifieds section once you set your price and see what kind of feed back you get
Good luck with the sale
Contact me if you want to trade for my 710M - it is perfect for your son

Put it on the SAV site in the classified section with some pics. Lots of action there. No cost as I recall to place the ad.

Thanks for the info guys.

IF I decide to sell, I'll need to take some better pictures! When I bought the 712, Thilo had a list of items that he'd done to the Pinz. It's a very clean good running rig. It does have a 24v to 12v converter and is set up to tow with a regular hitch.

I'll predict that once I get a list of all the good stuff done to it, take good pictures, fire it up and drive it around,.....I'll want to keep it. That's been the pattern for all my other vehicles.

That is what you should do - keep it!
Not sure how old your son is but in 5-10 years he will be all over it.

I just found all the info from my original purchase. And lots of pics. I don't have time to post them all right now, but maybe I should create an ad (if I'm serious) This info should help determine value...

Here is a list of things I will finish on the 6x6 # 0115:

Install 7 new radial tires ( I stuck with newer Original tires Malloyas?)
Install refurbished rear bumpers
Install weather resistant side rails with stainless hardware
Correct the installation of the electronic ignition
Full engine massage and tune up
Replace switch for parking brake control light
Replace both inner front door panels with custom aluminum panels
Refurbish steering wheel
Polish plastic windows in rear canvas
Install windshield wiper conversion
Install new, matching original black rear view mirrors
Replace bottom sliding window felt on front doors
Check and adjust all brakes
Complete electrical check
Check and lube wiper motor gear drive
check and lube wiper arm pivots and linkage
Replace rubber straps on front seats

Other good features of this particular 712 M:
Completely rebuilt drivetrain with all new, one piece original axle boots
Exhaust headers new with flex joint connectors
Excellent heater box and muffler
New cooling fan
All engine sheet metal refurbished
Engine refurbished recently in Switzerland
New hydraulic lines for 6x6 and locker actuators
Breather vent kit for front diff
Laminated safety glass windshield
New batteries
Door locks (still need to find keys, owner lost them) never found....
Electronic ignition
Newer style upper doors
Very good body, straight and no serious rust anywhere
Very good rear canvas with decent plastic windows
Good front canvas
Good front seats, drivers back has small patch along side
Good rear benches with all new rubber stops and hardware
No rust under battery and tool box
Brakes like new

Of course this truck will be sold with all tools and accessories as well as an English operators manual.

Well I just listed one of my 1968 California Special Mustangs. It's a project car - but I already have one, so this is a spare!

I'm going to list the PINZ too. Just can't bring myself to post the ad.
