Tire chain install

Could anyone provide a quick tutorial on how to install the original tire chains. I wanted to put them on yesterday for our ice storm but I wasn't sure I had them on correctly.

I've found that if you have a clean, dry surface (i.e.: garage floor) it's easier to just jack up one end of the Pinz and install the chains with the tires just an inch or so off the floor. Then switch to the other end. No need to start and drive the Pinz, just rotate the tire as you drape the chain on.

I have only put the chains on once to see if they fit my tires. I used a small (4 inch) piece of 2x4, placed the chains out flat and put the wood in the center and drove
up on it. Gives the right amount of space to maneuver the chains around to fit. I keep the two pieces of wood in the tool compartment.

Living on a very steep hill here in Poland I used the chains 2 years ago when we had very bad snow.......but these chains are not really designed for roads, they are off road chains and if you hit stretches of tarmacadam, even if negotiated very slowly they will wear very quickly. Poland is something of an enigma to me, 4x4s in this hilly region are comparatively rare, so the snowploughs (on big 4x4 tractors) skim the roads regularly so that cars have no problems. Ergo I need to use chains to get off my hill so that the Pinz doesn't become and uncontrollable toboggan going down. If they left me a foot or even a few inches of snow to grip on I would have no problems either going down or coming up, instead they skim the snow of and very quickly it becomes a half inch of compacted snow that might as well be ice. They do not grit or salt the roads here in the countryside (only the main roads get that treatment), they use ash from furnaces?? smelters etc and then they use it very sparingly. My Pinz chains also fit my UAZ...15 inch wheels with tall tyres.........I intend to get a good set of 'net' type chains for next year that won't wear so bad on the clear patches, my thinking is the strain will be spread over more chain area.

Make sure you test fit your original chains before you actually need them. Most of us are not running the same tire size as the original maloyas and will need extra links added to them.
