What was your longest trip in your pinz?
Re: What was your longest trip in your pinz?
I've sold two Pinzgauers (710M and 710K) that ended up being driven from NC to AZ. Only one had a problem and that was electrical. It can be done, but FL to CA is a long trip in a Pinz.

The most I've driven in a day is 250 freeway miles. Hearing protection is a must. I invested in a pair of Etymotic ER-25 custom molded ear plugs -
http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/erme.aspx
They rate right up there with better seats and a balanced drive shaft as the best things for highway driving.
They also have a universal fit -20db model that's much less expensive and available from Amazon, Aerostich, etc -
http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/er20.html
I like the fact that they are much more discrete than noise canceling head phones or ear buds in a state where anything covering both ears is illegal. There is an exception here in California for noisy commercial vehicles but I'd like to avoid having to test it out with Officer Friendly.

Re: What was your longest trip in your pinz?
hey im not saying i suggest it. and of course just because things worked out for me it doesn't mean your experience wont be horrible. BUT
me and my wife....having never driven a pinzgauer other than one 5 minute drive flew into Arizona bought a pinz 710m....drove to the grand canyon and then back all the way to the jersey shore....and i mean right to the beach.
now we took our time...barely did more than 50MPH but it was one of the best and funnest trips we have ever taken. the truck never so much as made a noise i wasn't happy with....not one little problem......
now i guess it all depends on what your expecting and use to.....if you think your driving a 2011 SUV then you are in for a seriously rude awakening....it is slow, noisy and there are no seat heaters.....mine didn't have ANY converters, stereo, nothing electronic (just the way i like it)
we stopped at every stupid little sight seeing thing there is across this country and now a year later we are planning on making another road trip down to new Orleans.....now this is my wife who wants to go on road trips rather than fly down to the Caribbean!
so if your willing to just go for it.....and fly by the seat of your pants a little i say just go for it!
im sure you can look up my posts with pictures from my trip if your interested.
GOOD LUCK!
( of course if all hell breaks loose i accept no responsibility)

Re: What was your longest trip in your pinz?
ok, so i'm leaving today to go pick up my pinz tomorrow. i plan on renting a uhaul and trailer and driving it back, just to eliminate any possibility of breakdown before i get home.
but can someone tell me what the gvwr is on a 712 amb? i keep seeing different weights on different websites. some say as much as 8800 lbs. if so i need a heavy duty trailer and bigger truck.

5300lbs for a 712M(soft top) so add another 1000lbs give or take a few lbs.
Under 6300lbs. Uhaul has some nice aluminum feather weight car trailers that should work for you.

Be careful with what you tell them you are hauling. It's easier for them to say no than to listen to you explain. Use their online system as a guide and "tell" them you're towing something of equivalent size and weight if they give you a problem.
A pinzgauer? Ohh it's like a full size f250... Etc.

Re: What was your longest trip in your pinz?
When I purchased my first two tour trucks (710M's) from an importer in Phoenix, A friend and I then drove almost 500 miles (in August-without AC) back to Colorado in one push. I had worried about doing such a trip in 30 yr. old surplus army trucks but everything worked perfectly.
I brought earplugs, seat cushions, motrin, and fire extinguishers. We stopped for breaks along the way every couple hours. All I could think about was getting back and changing out all the fluids asap. Turns out, the fluid wasn't that bad.

Re: What was your longest trip in your pinz?
I have driven from San Diego to Seattle and back three times. From Seattle to Denver and back twice and from Denver to San Diego twice.
I am not sure of the milage and did not keep track of the time but, usually 5 to 6 days each way. The least fun trip was from Seattle to Denver
one time with really bad weather and the heater didn't work (Webasto) all the time. That was 14 hours straight drive time through Utah into Colorado
and I was really numb when I got home. I just kept saying 'only a little farther'. Snow and cold on I-70. Really did not want to stop. Best to stay off I-70.
Been to Moab and through the Southwest pulling my trailer.
It's a real good idea to stop often and get out and walk around, have coffee and then stop later and let it out. See some sights, pick back roads
and enjoy the scenery. Stop and make breakfast or lunch even if it is only cereal or a sandwich. Wave to kids and truckers, chat with folks when
you stop and they bombard you with questions. But then I am retired and have no urgent schedule to meet.
Happy trails

Re: What was your longest trip in your pinz?
Just checked my trip log and Iceland in 2008 was 2629 km over about 2 and a half weeks mostly gravel roads and not a problem which was a good job as its a long way from a Pinzgauer garage!
Re: What was your longest trip in your pinz?
ok, made it from florida to colorado in 3 days. brand new tires on the trailer are already worn down. saw a pinz on a flatbed somewhere in kansas, waved at it. taking it to get smogged tomorrow, then once i get plates, its a nice drive to california in the pinz.
...and now the fun part.

Re: What was your longest trip in your pinz?
My wife and I just got back from 2k plus mile trip to the Yukon in my 710. We went as far north as the Arctic Circle, temperatures to 5 degrees Fahrenheit. Stock hot air blower for heat.
I am getting the pics sorted and will post a link. Fantastic scenery and the pics of the ice build up on the pinz are really "cool".
We were, of course, well dressed in all the miracle fabrics from REI and were always comfortable in the cab...we were suprised at how little wind leaks there were. the heater always kept the windshield from icing.
Burned one quart of oil over the whole trip. Started on the first crank on the coldest days. We slept in the back ...two sleeping bags and a bag liner each.
Did about 14 MPG.......glad to scratch this trip off the bucket list before the 6 dollar a gallon hits (altho already close to that in the Yukon)

Blackstack..I cant even imagine doing a trip like this in a pinz..I mean if I was forced to yeah..but the thought of breaking down in single digit temps in the middle of nowhere with a vehicle that there is no part support for and the fact that you were running on stock heat! seems to be a formidable task. Kudos to you for having the fortitude and good fortune to pull off sucessfully. Looking forward to the pics..regards

Pinz Pete....The box on top was half full of spares and always had my son and Scott at EI at the end of the skype line.....but we had a dozen self heating MRE's in case we anticipated the wrong spares being needed and got stuck by the side of the road !!!! Internet connection available at almost every way station and usually free
