AVGAS, as a lead additive.?????

Post by waterdog »

Since some of this engine require LEAD on the gasoline, what if i add AVGAS which is high on Lead.??? And mix it with low octane gasoline to lower the octane..???

Aviation fuel has NO lead.

Avgas in most modern countries does not have lead.

A better is to either get hardened valve seats or add 1ml per litre valve saver - a cheap solution.

I talked to the airplanes fuel suplier in my area , and he told me about the lead on the gas, so i got me wondering..... Cause i can't find any Lead additive for my gasoline.... On the other hand i wonder , if my truck is 1985, still needs lead.???

The Avgas pump will say 100LL that means low lead. You can get lead additive at most parts retailers.

Don't they have auto parts retailers in Paraguay too?

Lucas sells an "Octane" booster, that uses MMT as an additive. MMT will provide a metallic salt at the
valve seat and prevent wear. This additive was used in the U.S. as a lead substitute after the removal
of Lead for some number of years. More on this here:

They most likely do, but I have no idea whether they sell lead additive or not... Waterdog's answer made me assume they don't, but it's just an assumption.

Wait. Is this stuff even needed?? I just use regular with gas with some ethanol defenses. Even my old air cooled bikes I never worried about lead additives.

With modern fuels you can get the octane rating needed without lead however the lead also acted as a upper cylinder lubricant, in particular for the valve seats that stopped valve seat regression (erosion).

So for some engines without hardened valve seats, it is not the lead that is needed in the fuel but something to stop valve seat regression - in the past I have used this http://www.flashlube.com/en/products/va ... fluid.html - is cheap and easy to use and you can get kits that will provide it directly to the engine.

Most engines with aluminium heads do not need to use it as the valve seats are hardened. I do not know the Pinz very well but I would have thought they would have hardened valve seats and do not need lead or valve saver with modern fuels of the appropriate octane rating.

So the question to answer is - does the engine actually need lead or an upper cylinder head lubricant - I suspect not.

My 71 Jag V12 engine doesn't need it, neither do my Rover V8 engines or my Haflinger - all initially ran on leaded but do not need it. My 50s landrovers do not have hardened valve seats (part of the heads) but were designed to run on poor fuel so there is not an issue there either.

Well, comparing to my TW, the head design is the same with seats cut directly in to the head. There are no actual 'seats' like in an aluminum head motor. And those engines run a higher RPM for a VERY long time.

That being said, I'm sure that running a lead additive doesn't harm anything. I just don't understand if it's needed in this engine. Getting Jim's input would be good since he has seen several of these heads and can comment on how they wear.

If you looked at my posting on Valve Seat Ression see the PIX. That was #1 and had Zero PSI.

If you have older heads that have never been re-worked, then the seat will NOT be hardened.
This may not be a problem for you if don't run your Pinz at high load and RPM e.g. long HWY runs.
If this is your situation, IMHO it's just a matter of time before your exhaust valves wearout and you
loose all your compression. Not all Head shops understand the need for hardened seats, I know of
at least one case were a Head shop just re-seated the valves and didn't bother to ask or replace
with hardened seats. Guys who work on vintage Harley engines know better. The vintage car guys
across the pond understand this well as MG heads are just soft machined cast iron.

Be careful of additives, read the fine print. If they don't tell you what the metallic salt additive is don't
use it. Lucas and Miller's in the UK use MMT -- magnesium based. Some use sodium, good for seats
not so good for the chamber.

I am belts and suspenders now. Hardened seats and 50% recommended dose of Lucas booster.
I also use their Top Lub additive, reduces ring friction and wear.
