Tech day with Andre

Hi all,
Yesterday was a good Pinz day. Ran some Smart seats and parts up to Andre for my 710 project and scheduled some time with him for some TLC on my 712FAL. We knocked out a bunch of stuff that had been building and truth be told, I had been letting slide for the last few months.
First, Andre drove it. All seemed good with the exception the engine seemed a bit loud.
Back at the shop he installed the new speedo from SAV and pulled the turtle to check the engine. While in there we discovered the air filter cover ajar- closed that reducing noise significantly. (I had a backfire when I ran out of gas due to a bad ascender). We then cleaned the carbs of a bunch of gas residue and armored the accelerator cable so it wouldn't abrade the fuel lines. All else good with the power plant.
We pulled the floor deck and discovered clean steering fluid in the bottom of the well... so he pulled the assembly and discovered a few loose bolts. He tightened them up filled it with fluid and let it set for a while to verify no other leaks. While he was in there he also hammered out a small dent in the tub.
Next up I helped him pull the door panels so we could put in new lock tumblers so I could secure the cab. We then decided that the lock for the back door would be done... well, later... because to access the back panel we needed to get at the whole FAL deck would have to come off (the same reason the bad ascender had not been replaced previously).
Then a set of hub steps got put on the front axel.
Finally we rounded things out with a number of all small fixes- restrung a seat back band that was missing a clip, adjusted the wipers, replaced a rivet on the canvas roof pull and Andre put on a back spare tire locker.
All in all a good day and the run back down to Houston was a smooth (& quieter) 55-60mph trip. Thank you Andre, Dave and Shaun for getting it all knocked out while I tried to stay out of the way. =)
happy new years all! MM
