who Does Complete Restorations on 710M?

Post by dckoch »

Been a while since I have been on the forums. Looking for some one or Company (preferably in Arizona) who can do a complete restoration on my Pinzgauer 710M. Any help is appreciated.

Thank you,

David

Expedition Imports in San Francisco is my personal favorite. 200K USD will get you a nut-and-bolt restoration that's arguably even better than the factory restorations. For more than 200K you can specify just about any wild mods you like as long as you're keeping the air cooled petrol engine. If you consider 200K crazy expensive then I'd say Andre at Fat Fabrications is indeed probably your man, although I'm sure he wouldn't mind if you gave him 200,000 dollars for his work.

Sorry... EI is amazing and we’d be screwed without them but your quote of $200k for a nuts and bolt restore is ludicrous and I don’t think fair to Scott.

That quote came directly from Scott three or four years ago, when I was mulling over the possibility of having EI perform a restomod on a 710. Bear in mind 200K buys you what's essentially a brand new Pinz with absolutely every upgrade the aftermarket offers for an air cooled Pinz, from all new wiring looms to a Goatwerks 2.7 powerplant to disc brakes to polyurea coated bodywork, a no-holds-barred restomod, not merely a factory restoration.

My Pinz has everything you mentioned and much much more, completed just 3 years ago. I will sell it at 1/2 the price you quoted.

Maybe a bit of perspective.......As I recall the conversations with Nicholas where something along the lines of him wanting what didn't exist to be able to load on his private jet to fly into wherever he was going for a day's jaunt. The more we discussed the more the requests were lets say "uncommon".... Honestly, and don't take it the wrong way, but I thought he was a little boy with big boy dreams sitting in his mothers basement. Every time he was invited to come to Vallejo, in person, it never really fit into his schedule.....? I could totally be wrong, and if so I will have to live with the fact that I walked away from a great job!

Now to the OP's original question. I currently only know of 2 specialists......Andre and Jim. Andre full restoration, and Jim doing mechanicals. (Best to check with both as things may have changed.) We stopped turning wrenches other than for some special cases back in 2014 when we moved to our new facility.

In terms of costs.....do some research. 200K on a pinz resto is a "blow off" number. However, it's actually not that far off for a major re-do/mod. Take a look at Icon. Take a look at S-tec. I have a 150K all stock truck coming out of the factory next week for a client, and it's .....all stock....... We just shipped 60K in parts to a restoration shop for an "as new" 404. That doesn't include any labor which is the BIGGEST part of any restoration.

You can get a REALLY nice truck for 30-50K in restoration costs. When we were doing our custom tour trucks on the 718 chassis, (https://expedition-imports.com/Pinzguae ... _p_15.html) they were tagging out in the 70-80K range. One thing is for sure......the cost will continue to climb as fewer people want to touch the trucks......

Cheers,
Scott

I've done a few restorations on other vehicles, and one big factor is the condition of the vehicle to begin with. A rusty piece of junk with suck up a lot more money than a clean, maintained original. Common sense, start with something good!
I might also add that you might want to try doing it yourself. A Pinz is nuts and bolts- a puzzle on wheels- like anything else. Have parts connections and know a good paint shop, and take your time. Of course, you must have a garage and tools, #1 on the list!
