California weight fee ?

Post by bikmakr »

Now, when renewing your Pinz registration in California, there is a $231 weight fee? They just keep making this sh#% up !!

This state is so out of control ! They are hell bent on getting everything that isn't a Tesla off the street !!

It goes back to how your Pinz was registered originally. "IF" you trust a DMW official to do it, you're screwed!

K's are fairly straightforward, with seats , they're a passenger van or a SUV or utility class.

M's are a little different. Without seats in the rear or folded down, they are a truck, no if and or buts .

If you go to the DMV to get a M registered in Cal, have all seats in the functional position and the canvas in place. At that point it is classified as a utility vehicle or a SUV. As an additional insurance, do not have any load in the rear. Seats belts in the rear help reinforce the class.

If your vehicle was registered as a truck, you can get it reclassified with a inspection at the CHP or DMV to verify it meets that category. Or pay a DMV service to do it.
The service "may" be your cheapest route. Depending on the inspector at the DMV or CHP, they may ask you some "harmless" questions that can bury you.

I've done more vehicles than I care to think about registered in Cal and have one that I had to convince a DMV service it was legal. Interestingly enough, the only thing the DMV didn't like was the VIN

BTW, the weight fee has always been on trucks, it has only becoming worse every year
