Roll bars

Post by gfreestone »

Hi Folks,

Has anybody out there put an external roll cage, or substantial roofrack on a 710M?

(am thinking of putting a roof-tent on the pinz for my anticipated trip to Libya next year)

Also, being a tall person (6'2" and long in the torso), I have been thinking of raising the roof, and wondered if the standard 'roll-cage' would be significantly weakened, so should I consider putting a supplementary internal tube-roll bar behind the driver/passenger seats?

TIA

Here are some camper ideas:

Here are a few rollbar ideas:

I havent built mine yet but I will add a exo cage to my 712 as well, the tough part is not having such a bulky look, still in the design phase.

I still keep coming back to this idea for a camping Pinz. Remove the seats and put a pull out drawer with all the camping equipment.

I did something like that with my Haflinger. I am 6'3" and though I was able to use the stock vehicle, I felt that my viewing angle was poor enough that it warranted some fabrication work. At the same time I wanted better protection in the advent of a rollover, so I had a 4 inch spacer bar put in beneath the windshield, a taller windshield frame, and then I had custom Pinzgauer-like supports with and integral rollcage made for the vehicle--all made to be high enough to accomodate me. My avatar shows the final product.

In HafWit's Family Fleet he lists:

1967 Swiss Military Haflinger
1971 North American Haflinger

Have I missed something? Were Haflingers made over here?

Thanks,

Steve

No, but SDP did modify the original design somewhat so it would comply with US requirements .... (the mods were mainly to lighting)

Original design:

US spec'd design:

The US spec'd headlight hardware is as per the Pinzgauer.

JFI: When Haflinger production ceased the Australian importer managed to get 32 US spec Haflingers sent here, so we have a number of these units in OZ!

Very nice design Miles! What are the long rectangular boxes/containers near the rear?

They were going to be for holding gas, water and deisel cans. I am currently looking at placing them to the rear so I can mount ramps and sandgrates at that location to keep the width down. The design will probably go through many more changes before I am happy, but its a start.
Also the hatch pattern in the middle will be a adjustable web netting suitable for molle attachments or holding soft objects, wet gear ect.

Very cool. I really like the forward angled vertical bars. Now let's see it in metal! :D

I'd like to see some more detailed pics of the internal cage on the 712M. I wonder how much it really intrudes on the driver, but I'd be interested in doing something similar.

The internal roll cage was built by a local offroad shop here in Phx after the truck rolled down into a valley from a shelf road. The truck looks freshly painted because it was just out of the shop. Unfortunately and unrelated to the accident the owner has since passed away but I think I can still get pictures of the truck. The owner was fairly short and still complained of making contact with the roll bar. I will PM you if I can get some pics.

Well here is #3 so far, #2 sucked! The Spare will tilt down with a step mounted in the well, and will serve as a lock. The whole assembly will be spring assited, and take the weight off of the rear door. The canisters on the sides at the rear should hold 3 Gas cans each and will pivot down for loading or have swing open doors, not sure yet.

Miles, I like how the rear can holders are recessed to allow for side protection, 8) 8) the tire-step idea is way cool !
