Interesting failure

My buddy was on Hawaii for the week and took a Pinzgauer tour. Since he has been in mine several times and knew more then the average guy about pinzgauers the driver shared a few details of his truck. One was this interesting failure of a 30 year old rim. Anyone else seen something like this before?

Judging by the crack patterns it looks like the lugs were overtightened and split the holes.

I confer with Jim.
However it's a "must do" to check for junk/debris trapped between the drum & wheel.
Also it's important to check the brake drum/shoe adjust aperture plug for "stand proud" as I have come across some that have not allowed the wheel to "seat" correctly leading to distortion.
Levels of cracking like the picture I have only seen recently on big trucks with cone wheel nuts and the defects mentioned.

what are the chances the cracks could have been caused by the wrong lug nuts? I know the thread size if common but the tapper on the nuts seating surfaces are different.
