Newbie Advice
I have lurked here for a while and have wanted a Pinzgauer for about 8 years.
I live in North County San Diego in San Marcos.
I am looking for advice on where to buy a Pinz.
Should I buy from a private party or one of the dealers I see on the internet like Thilo's?
I e mailed him with some questions and he got right back to me with some good advice.
Some questions I have are:
Is the EXC axle upgrade a must or not?
I read on one of the websites about driveline vibration and a mod that needs to be done to make it better that costs a few thousand. Is this common?
I am new to Pinzgauers and just wanted some general advice.
I am more concerned with getting a good truck versus getting the absolute lowest price. I would rather pay a little more but get something that has the bugs worked out.
Anything else to avoid?
Thanks for the advice.

There are plenty of reputable sources for Pinzgauers. I would start here at the forum. I would also reread every conversation or Q&A that you see in this forum in recent months as this is going to be your very best source for knowledge and knowledgeable people when it comes to Pinzgauers. It's like one big virtual electronic hug. (I know you guys love me too )
I would PM some of the more "vocal" participants to get their take on the Pinzgauer dealers out there as strong opinions abound. I bought mine through a dealer and had a good experience. Others will have their own views.
It has taken you 8 years to get around to finally getting one???
My personal advice is that you should buy the best truck you can afford. Don't jack around with a "project" unles you want a project. I paid a premium for my truck and I got a premium truck.

If I were you, i would buy from a reputable dealer. it may cost a little more but in the long it probly will save you some headaches. As far as the guy that has the post about the driveline vibration google his company name with no breaks in it and read the complaints. EXC does take some of the noise out but it is not a must.

new pinz
I would buy it from someone you can trust and that will be round for awhile.
I bought mine from Expedition Imports, I had been getting my MOG parts from them and SAV for years. If you can, go to the MogFest in Calico and see lots of them in action.
Ramona Motors (mentioned above) is close to you and the guys there are straight up guys. There are usually a few in the yard to look at. ...and, I'll bet they would love the opportunity to get out for a bit and show them to you on a trail.
Take your time and get a good one, don't cheap out on this. It is not worth it, you will spend more down the line.
Morris,

Pinzgauers
I think there are a lot of individuals you can trust to buy a truck from. Don't assume that every individual has a truck with issues that the dealer won't also have. I just picked up a 710K in Phoenix that was every bit as described and drove it home 1600 miles in the middle of winter. It doesn't take too much to be bummed out though when you are dropping 10K or more on a truck. Budget carefully for repairs and expect there to be something wrong with it when you start driving it often. I have never bought a used truck that needed absolutely nothing. I have only bought one Pinzgauer from a dealer and it was really no better than any of the other Pinzgauers I have bought. I buy pretty much everyone I can get my hands on around here, around 15 trucks now. I have never had one that didn't need something fixed but the only one that I have EVER had to tow home (twice!) was the one I bought from the dealer. It wasn't even really his fault even though I was super pissed until I figured out what the deal was. It had a decal in the tank that would plug the pickup every once in awhile and this was missed by me and two mechanics before I figured out what the deal was after spending a lot of time and money on it.

Andy[/quote] And i simply made a suggestion to do some research before he made any choices on who had work on his pinz. I did not give him my side of the story, or am i recommending him because i live in texas and he gives me free advice, i simply made a suggestion. I find it funny that a dealer in his town has gone as far as posting on his web site not to use him, and one guy from the mog forum has gone as far as to call him a fictional writer. There are many more. By the way the only way you could find my complaint would be by reading my post on this forum and not googling his company name. 75pinz do you just like getting a different pinz every six months?

New Pinz
Yes. I like to try them all.
I basically just buy and sell them until I am really happy with them. This is my first K model. I wish I would have gotten one a long time ago. With two kids, it's much easier with the 4 doors and it's much more water tight. I really like it and may keep it awhile. I had intended to keep the last 6x6 but a guy named Steve talked me out of it. It now lives in Moab. Really nice guy.

Thanks again for all the help.
I dont want to come off as paranoid but I bought a "concours restoration" from a guy who was supposedly reputable and it was a basket case taped together.
I had to pay someone to restore it again. It has been under restoration for 2 years and I am still waiting.
I just couldnt take the abuse my wife would give me if I got rooked again.
This seems like a much smaller community and I have corresponded with quite a few people who seem genuine.
I will have my truck soon..

Definitely worth checking out the inventory at Ramona Motors. They have quite a few there right now (I drive past every day).
I bought my 712 there last November. I must have gone by there about ten times before I picked one out, and they were always very open about explaining the pros and cons of each Pinz they had.
They are good guys to deal with.
Expedition Imports is another good one in CA, but not as close to you.

I just got mine and drove through some nasty weather. I agree with some of the other responses that you should be PREPARED to spend some extra money on it after the sale. They can't know everything and it's used, but more than that they haven't been driven much since they were purchased for re-sale.
I had them put in synthetic and i have gone back to 90 weight in the transfer case for the summer - may replace the seals all around before winter and then put the synthetic back in.
George Stauffer (www.staufferclassics.com) was great to deal with, but he's no mechanic. He has others get them ready for him so he trusts Helwig with his maintenance stuff and they were great too. I would buy another vehicle from him too (LOVE THE BENTLEY he has there WOW - 502 with a supercharger and NOS - 1000 HP)
.
EI has been great to deal with for some parts I have needed too.
If you are near DENNIS then I would get him to check it over for you. Linden Engineering have been a wealth of information and a great place for parts too.
One place I woudn't buy from right now is ME
- cause I love mine OK....so don't try to talk me outta mine. 710K rules

I just bought Scott Simons truck in AZ yesterday.
Went out there and drove it and loved it. Bought it on the spot.
I leave for Korea in the morning so I cannot bring it back for 2 weeks but Scott has graciously offered to keep it at his house until I get back.
I am excited and can't wait to get it to my garage.
Once I drive it for a few days I will see if Jim Laguardia will look at it and see if he thinks it needs any work done.
