Hey Friends,

I had an extraordinary experience today while escorting my classes on a filed trip to the newly refurbished Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum.

Scattered thorough out the ship are veterans of the armed forces who donate their time explained and relating the history of this great ship. My group was visiting the Navigation Bridge and over in the corner was one of these veterans. He was a small elderly man decked out in his volunteered outfit. I asked the man if he had ever served aboard the Intrepid. His answer was no but he related that he was a Marine who, during World War II, was stationed aboard a battleship and that he saw action in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

In the Atlantic he participated in the Normandy invasion.

It was what he witnessed in the Pacific that sent goose bumps across my skin. He proudly informed me that he had been at Iwo Jima, (Flags of Our Fathers fame). I am currently read the book that the movie was based on. He next informed me that he saw the famous flag rising from the deck of the battleship he was stationed on. My mouth dropped.

I did not know what to say but to ask to shake his hand.

These guys are our nations finest. They did the impossible, under unimaginable conditions. They all deserve our everlasting gratitude and respect. It's a shame we are losing this generation so quickly. There will never be another generation like them.

I still can't watch Band of Brothers when they interview the actual guys without choking up and shedding a tear.

God bless them.
