Pinzgauer of America question

I was just looking again at the Pinz of America brochure http://www.goatwerks.com/images/Flash%2 ... merica.pdf, and wondered about some of the parts on that truck, namely, the grillwork, wheels, side mirrors, and the 3-wiper system.

The truck appears to have been an actual truck. But the Pinz featured in the Aug. '78 Four Wheeler and July '78 Car & Driver mags was a different vehicle, with more stock looking parts.

Can anybody here shed some light on the details of the PoA brochure truck?

Never noticed how lush and extravagant the US version was. I wondered how many they actually sold here.

To my knowledge, none, at least as a new vehicle.

I've spoken with a guy near Denver who claimed to own a Pinz which was originally brought into the US for FMVSS compliance testing. His may be the first one to these shores. But they were never DOT approved for sale in the U.S., as Steyr apparently pulled out before they began sales. I'd heard it was as a result of losing a lawsuit over a Puch moped. Perhaps others can chime in with details on it.

That "American Pinz" is a really interesting hybrid vehicle. Looks like lots of TD parts including the doors and disc brakes. No radiater hood so must be a gasser.

With the 'VIP steering wheel' ? Maybe that sounded better in Austrian.

The Pinzgauer on the brochure was an actual vehicle, although at that time it was not operational. The installed fuel injection system was not working properly, so the Pinzgauer was more pushed then driven. It was a gasser with TD parts and a more 'luxurious' versions with carpets and sound proofing and the above mentioned K-Jetronic. The specific car on the brochure was displayed at various exhibitions in the US and then shipped back to Austria. Although the opportunity was there in the US, SDP at that time pulled out because of the product liability law and specifically because of the necessary umbrella policy necessary to sell such vehicle in the US.

I'm confused. After what?

In the brochure, it's a gasser nose. But if that was true, then they wouldn't have had "TD" parts back then.

Do you know what is the date of the brochure? (It was my understanding that it dated to the late '70's.)

Thank you for any info.

The brochure was from the early '80's, if I remember correctly. SDP tried to create a civilian gasoline version shortly before the diesel was introduced.

The Pinzgauer in the brochure was a prototype with the first fuel injection. With after I meant the upgrade to production parts and getting the fuel injection system working and the obvious paint job. The TD hood was only for the looks.

Hi,

Reviving an old thread: I don't think the following page was ever mentionned here:
http://pinzgauer.haflinger-4wd.com/
Interesting web page from Austria, includes scans of brochures and articles dating back to when SDP was having a go at US civilian sales. Still a good read.
