Flexible Cable Lever Control
Flexible Cable Lever Control
Does anybody know of an "off the shelf", preferably, three lever control unit, similar (or smaller) to the two lever one in the 710/712 Pinzgauer?
(couldn't find a photo online so did a quick pic)
I'm working on a mod for the 718 and have searched the web in vain for such a unit, but I daresay after I finally decide to make it, someone will say they know of one that is readily available, hence the post to try and avoid that situation ........Thanks!

Re: Flexible Cable Lever Control
might try these folks, they have helped on past projects. They would build the transfer case cable but it would have been close to the cost of getting one from a pinz dealer, so I just supported the pinz industry instead.

Re: Flexible Cable Lever Control
Don't know how long of a throw you need, or the total cable length, but ebay has some lawn mower cable control units that might be
modified to your use:

or:

Ford Mustang 3 cable heater control unit?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1965-1966-ford- ... 2c&vxp=mtr
Seems that 1960's era cars (Mustang, Buick etc...) used 3 cable control units for heating/vents. Many more of these are on US ebay, some in pretty good looking condition and may only need a handle/knob modification to meet the 718 military style.

Re: Flexible Cable Lever Control
First of all, thanks everyone for all the posts.
A lot of the items look like they may "fit the bill" but I'II have to do some research as the area in which the "lever control" is to fit is fairly small and many of the items sizes are not listed.
I do like the Fiat 124 Spider unit and I'd grab it on the off chance that it might fit if it wasn't for the high postage cost to Australia (twice the cost of the unit) but I'II look into all the options first.
Dave, the reason for the "request" is that I have in mind to modify the centre dash panel of the 718 so I can fit a 10" tablet into the dash, for navigation etc.
As I'm sure Dave is aware, but for the benefit of everyone else, the heater unit in a 718 is behind the centre dash panel and the heater controls (which are in the top hole) are moulded into the heater housing so cannot be repositioned.
I'm planning on cutting off the control unit which will then give me more space, then "cut and shutting" the vac form to incorporate a dedicated tablet "depression".
I'II not lose anything on the original dash that I care about, only the ash tray (and I'm a non-smoker) and the cigarette lighter which I plan to move elsewhere and change for a proper 12/24 volt output.

Re: Flexible Cable Lever Control
That's what I thought, but didn't know what you wanted the third control for?... goosing your passenger?
I am assuming you plan to put the controls to the left of the dash in the 'lower' area of the center panel?
Have you thought about rotary cable controls?.. just a thought
Did your truck have that large cutout where the locker switches were? That was a nice upgrade over my P80 where you had to remove the entire center panel to service anything

Re: Flexible Cable Lever Control
There are three "levers" on the original setup Dave (Temp, Demist and Cabin control) so I'd like to mimic the original setup.
I had thought of using rotary controls but given that I want to avoid making the panel radically different, or any larger, limits the surface "real estate" and position somewhat, so levers attached by short flexible cables appear to be the best option.
Miles, OziExplorer it is!
I've used it for years now and love it (I recently loaded the Android version on my phone, but it would be far better on a bigger screen )

Re: Flexible Cable Lever Control
My mind's gone... I can't remember how many control there were... but I can use the excuse that I've slept since I last was near a TD dash.
not that I used them either....I'm in sunny Kalifornia

No, no, it's on the RIGHT side!Prof, gotta flip over the negatives, looks like your steering wheel will be on the wrong side!
I learnt when I was in Malaysia that many cars there weren't ever fitted with heaters.... the Pinzgauers were, but that was unusual!
We've had a number of days lately over 40C (104F) and there are still a lot of bushfires burning, so I think heaters/heating are the last thing on most Australians minds at present ....not me however
