My '70's Steyr-Puch can't be hacked. In fact it (a diesel) can drive all day without a battery or alternator!

It's funny that you should post this. Just yesterday I was listening to an NPR show about self-driving cars, and I was wondering how long it would take for someone to hack them. I guess someone beat me to the idea.

I think the invention of cruise-control was the beginning of the end of people actually "driving" their cars. Much like traction control and ABS, this technology is aimed at the lowest common denominator of drivers. But when the vehicle is in control, and when (not if) the computers either fail (or get hacked into), people are just along for the ride.

I know, I know, it's all in the name of safety. But guess what? People die in brand new technology-laden cars every day too. Safety has more to do with the driver than with the cocoon they are strapped into, IMHO.

I'm with you Vince. Gimme an older 4x4 any day, and I'll be happy.

Besides my '79 710, I own an '06 Dodge Cummins and a 2014 Subaru Outback. None of them has any internet connectivity or fancy audio. Who needs the distraction? But I'm 61 and an old fogey (a happy one) by some estimations

Yep, I've got a war time BSA motorcycle (WM-20) that can start and run w/o a battery, just no lights. Still blows my mind.

Much simpler times and mechanics, reason I own what I do.

And if you think hacking cars is scary stuff, they can hack commercial airliners as well...

A news report came out about two weeks ago on all the cars being hacked because they had an internet connection, they could be shut down when driving, open the car doors and so on.

This is and will become a BIG problem, the more we rely on this the less we can rely on it.

apparent Uber just hired the 2 guys ..& probably lay them off too after a few quarters..
