Your Face Is Ugly

Post by nicholastanguma »

How much "better" is the performance of the P90-93 than the P80? I rather prefer the P80's face. Is there any way to intercool a P80 without resorting to the P90-93's ugly nose?

Yes, I do realize putting stock in a Pinzy's visual nuances is utterly ludicrous.

I am in the same camp with you on this - the front just sticks out too far when viewed from the side - it does make me think that you should be able to fit a 12V Cummins in there though...

The difference of the radiator shroud is because of the enlargement of the radiator in the P90 and the addition of the inner cooler on P93.

Personally I like the P93 design better than the P80.
My favourite is the original sloping design of the 710/712, but with the P80 they really just added a "nose" to the air-cooled form, and that's what it looks like.....a simple add on, to what was an already perfect form.
At least with the P93, the additional headlight surrounds, the deeper/more aggressive "nose" and the extended front bumpers, give it a tough look that is less related to the original form.

This page may help with the model differences:

Besides the weight and size probably being way too much, the VW diesels are high rpm (4500 +) compared to the 12v that were govern to around 2600 +/- rpm.
It'd be a tractor that'd would rip everything apart from the drivetrain to the body

Yes I agree - was just referring to the possible length of the engine with the extended nose.

Not a fan of the VW 6 cylinder - would prefer a Mercedes in one myself. It was always a mystery why the Pinz ended up with the VW lump with they were building G-wagens with Mercedes diesels in them... but I have heard the various stories which I suppose are plausible. Unfortunate... but I guess the HP of the late 1970's Mercedes diesels were still pretty low - sure would be nice with a OM602DLA29 2.9L turbocharged engine with 88 kW / 120 hp output.

The engine bay is the same on all of them. The changes and extension of the shroud is from the radiator on the P90 being larger and in front of the tunnel . The P80 radiator is in the tunnel. The P93 has the innercooler mounted in front of the radiator.

I've heard the VW decision was a business one. Pinz use the VW engine, SDP get the snycro conversion

Very helpful, David. Thanks!

So, theoretically, a P90 or P93 shroud could simply bolt onto a P80 in place of the stock P80 shroud without any fabrications or alterations needed?

Life and TD Pinzgauers aren't quite that simple :D

Whilst the same VW 2.4 diesel is basically used in all (non British made) TD Pinzgauer variations, the later P93 model was intercooled.
The whole idea of the fitting a larger shroud on the P93 was to accommodate the intercooler in front of the radiator (as Dave mentioned).......this was a fairly simple thing to do, however routing the piping for that intercooler caused major problems.

The P93 floor-pan tub panels have been substantially modified and the metal, air pipes themselves look like they have been in a bad smash due to the fact that they have been factory "crushed" in specific locations to clear all the bodywork, motor and ancillary components.

If you fitted the larger P93 Shroud to a P80 or P90 so you could fit a functional intercooler you would need to make substantial modifications.
Mike T in Malaysia did this to a 716, P90 and it was a LOT of work.
