Engine Assembly Question

When fitting the cylinders to the crankcase, the service manual says to
"Smear cylinder pad with sealing material." I presume the "pad" is the
base of the cylinder, but what sealing material is appropriate, bubble gum,
silicone rubber, etc... ? I suppose that you wouldn't want to use a sealant
that got hard or actual glued the cylinder to the block.

On another topic, I have found that a product called Marine Clean, from the
POR-15 folks, works great to soften and remove carbon deposits on the
pistons and head.

I use the hardening Permatex on the cyl bases. It seems the closest to the original hard stuff. I've used it on 3 engines with no problems. It also offers a long set-up time for minor repositioning.

The proper sealant is permatex aviation sealer #2. Apply it to the sealing surfaces. Take care not to get it on the piston skirts . I do the block mating surface and 1/4" into the mounting holes as well as the cylinder mating surfaces.. This sealer is used on almost every component on the truck.
