When fitting the cylinders to the crankcase, the service manual says to
"Smear cylinder pad with sealing material." I presume the "pad" is the
base of the cylinder, but what sealing material is appropriate, bubble gum,
silicone rubber, etc... ? I suppose that you wouldn't want to use a sealant
that got hard or actual glued the cylinder to the block.
On another topic, I have found that a product called Marine Clean, from the
POR-15 folks, works great to soften and remove carbon deposits on the
pistons and head.
