wheeling in New Mexico

Hi all,
There is a small possibility that my family may relocate to the Santa Fe, New Mexico area. What's the wheeling like in that area and is it readily accesible?

Michael,

If that happens you will be closer to Moab and we will have to get a trip going there. Just got to Denver and I cant wait to travel this summer.

Lots of wheeling in New Mexico. Plus utah and colorado are very close.

Some of the largest offroad comps occur here in the great state of NM.

All depends on your skill level.

I'm thinking more towards recreational, not competion.

I'm wondering if there is an area somewhat close to the Santa Fe area that has a camping / wheeling area.

The answer to your question is YES. NM is covered in public lands. Its a totally different feel from any other state. Lots of great forest roads, and plenty of remote camping locations. A very good portion of it can be had just outside of santa fe. If you fancy a drive, places like the Gila Nat forest are incredible. These places all offer rec offroading. The Web just north of SF has harder wheeling and lots of camping. And of course farmington and Las Cruces have serious wheeling and great camping in a more desert aspect.

In fact, just west of santa fe, I mean like just outta city limits between SF and Los alamos there is a spot called Diablo Canyon. Basically its a huge area of public land that spans almost half way to albuquerque. Its all fun easy wheeling with great camping on the cliffs above the Rio grande. The trail/trails were once in 4wheeler mag as a great scenic route with camping etc.

Keep in mind fire restrictions here in NM. Alot of times we burn even during restriction, but just be mindfull of what you burn and where.

Quick comment about NM.

If you are in a stable financial position and will continue in that position, you will love NM.

If you are prone to moving from job to job, it will eat you alive.

But if you are a bum, you will live the highlife.

Yep, public land, for wheeling, is one of the few things Texas is short of.

I'll have to get a job, but I can do that pretty easily with my background.

I was in Santa Fe in November Very cool place if I remember right public land on three sides with hiking trails. It was nice to wake up to the smell of burning pinion. One of Americas oldest home is located in old town.

Yeah, it's a great place. I spent about a week and a half there last year, once with my dad, and once with the entire family. My dad moved out there at end of 2007.

Somewhat touristy, but a beautiful city. It's the oldest and the highest state capitol in the US.

We're getting tired of the rat race out here in SoCal.

If your interested in owning a european auto repair shop in SF PM me. Its a very reputable shop. Comes with property etc. Not 100% sure its still for sale but I can check again.

Beware the job market is very small here no matter what your background.

I have a tentative GSM job in Santa Fe lined up already, as the summer approaches I'll be able to firm that up.
