712 Camper, Bay Area Craigslist

Anyone know anything interesting about this vehicle?
Aside from the California price it looks like it might fill my needs.
However, I'm guessing that it's either not really a 1981 or not registered and titled in CA.

I imagine it would be super slow, tippy, and get even worse mileage with that tall box.

I'll be calling the seller soon but wanted to do my homework first.

Thanks!

Super slow? Could be, depending on your definition. My 712W, as currently outfitted, is about 8k pounds. But with Jim L.'s 2.7l conversion it is not too bad unless you get high headwinds and grades above about 60-80 feet per minute (I can stay in 5th in a TD overdrive tranny at those grades, as much as 150 feet per minute grades in 4th which is 1:1).

Tippy? Depends on how much weight they put high up. I can stand in the back of my truck but it can still negotiate 30 degree side slopes (although I doubt it would go much further before going over). And I can really notice the increased stability just taking the spare off the cab roof (moving weight down). The pivoting leaf springs in the rear of the 712s are quite stable as far as tippyness goes; I get very little body roll in turns.

Mileage? Well, depends. I get between 9 and 12 mpg at highway speeds. This is no different than I got with the original, worn out stock engine (before the 2.7l conversion, custom cam, and EFI that together increased HP by about 30%).

But I agree, you will not have success getting that truck registered in CA despite what the ad says.

Thanks Jim, your truck is one of the nicest I've seen.

Didn't mean to insult the mighty pinz, just aware that they are slow by modern standards, and unless this one has engine upgrades it's likely to be a little slower with the tall box.

Is there a way to tell by the pictures if it's really an 81? From what Scott has posted if it's mid 70s or later it's not going to keep the alleged CA reg. I'm hoping to move out of this crazy state, but not ready yet.

The camper build out does look nice.

Thanks!

The 4th pic looks like a few kilos of cocaine...had to look twice. That would have run the price up quite a bit.... :P
