It was built by Steyr but was based on BMW's petrol motor -

Continental Mark VII 1984
The Continental Mark VII was introduced in August 1983 for the 1984 model year. It was available in a base trim level, Designer Edition (Bill Blass Edition and Versace Edition). A new sport-oriented upper trim level was introduced with this generation, called the LSC (Luxury Sports Coupe). Alongside the standard 140 hp 5.0L V8 shared with the Ford Mustang is a 114 hp 2.4L turbocharged diesel inline-6 obtained from BMW to offer a more fuel efficient engine offering; all Mark VIIs came with a 4-speed automatic transmission.

In 1986, the rarely-seen BMW diesel was dropped from the line, as was the Versace Edition.

Let me feed in some details:
Steyr is a city in the province Upper Austria. The Puch factory there used to produce trucks and diesel engines.
When Puch started the develoment of the G-Wagon they also intended to use an in-house developed engine.
Unfortunately the development took much longer than anticipated, and all potential customers looked for alternatives.
The G-wagon got equipped with Mercedes engines, the TD Pinzgauers got the Volkswagen engine (to compensate for the T3 syncro production in Graz) and BMW was worst off. They had invested heavily into the joint development , so they purchased half of the factory in Steyr und took over the majority of the Diesel development team. This team was tasked with the adaption of the BMW M20 petrol engine to Diesel, and BMW started the production of Diesel engines in the early 80-s.
The BMW engine factory grew and grew, and still all Diesel and all 4 cylinder Petrol engines of BMW are produced in Steyr.
The remaining team at Puch kept on developing the "monobloc" engine, and designed an excellent engineering work that none of the potential customers actually purchased, due to long term contracts they had signed due to the delay. The Steyr diesel was one of the first direct inject engines for cars, and it has no cylinder head gasket (monobloc !), valves are inserted first, then the crankshaft with rods and pistons pre-attached, and finally the oil pan.
This sturdy work horse found its use in powering boats, and later got rediscovered for the "repower" packages offered by S-Tec for G-Wagons and Diesel Pinzgauers. So they finally got the engines that were designed for them, just with a small delay of 30+ years ....
