Smart Car Seats

Build projects, things that guys have come up with to make a Pinz better (or worse?) and aftermarket add-ons.

Smart Car Seats

Post by Bruce Berger »

I picked up a pair of Smart Car For2 Passion seats this weekend. I'm curious to find out how others have mounted them in their Pinzgauers. Also I'm interested in finding out how to remove the air bags and seat belt guides. If the airbags are not easily removable what is the best way to safe them to minimize the chance of accidental activation.

Bruce

My Smart seats did not have any airbags; so no activity from this side
I simply took an angle grinder and cut off the belt guides and painted the cutr with black.

The adapter plate was water cut by a member of the German Pinzgauer forum. It has hooks at the front edge which fit precisely into the seat mounts, and a hole on the rear for the usual screw.

I too have Smart seats in my Pinz
Andre did the mount and they were just mounted to the stock Pinz frames - have pics but can't find them currently, will post if I find them.
Only passenger side shoulder belt guide need to be cut off

I have up making frames for after market seats and just use the pinz frames as is pictured above. Only requires cutting a few small welds and if for some reason they needed to be returned to stock just cut the new welds and reweld then on. I have used many different import seats just as long as they are under 19" wide and less then 3" tell at seat bottom they will fit the same as stock.

All,

Thanks for the pics. I got my seats from the guy in El Cajon (San Diego area). He still has quite a few left. I was working on them yesterday and think I came up with a plan to mount them based on your input. I only wish I could weld. I wish Andre was still in SoCal to fab something up 8(

I got my seats from a guy dismantling Smart Cars. He was located in El Cajon. He had plenty left and still has some cars to dismantle. Autobahn dismantling, good guys if you can actually go there he will cut a deal.

Thats where i got mine, they where like new, a little pricey on the shipping but then they had spent a lot of time boxing them so they didnt get damaged.

How much do they raise the seating position? I have to kind of slouch down to see under the windshield header at stop lights, etc. I would love to have some modern seats, but can’t afford to sit any higher...

I don’t think mine make you sit any higher than stock however the front of the seat is slightly higher which helps if you have long legs (I don’t) .
for me it’s a real upgrade not only for comfort but for the safety of having a head rest.
I’ll take a better photo showing the hight and post it when I get home.

Very excited to have sourced a pair of seats/frames, waiting on shipping quote on the smart car seats... This post got me motivated, few more days and some fabricating and I will be joining the new seat club!
