Okay, so playing with my new to me 710 M and thus far I have only felt comfy taking her up to about 45 MPH. And frankly, it doesn't feel like it wants to go a helluva faster than that speed. This is on level dry pavement. She's not making any funny noises, smoking, or doing anything else weird, and I am sure that I have it in fifth gear. Also I do not have any of the diffs locked.
My reading on the subject suggests that she should be able to get up to 55 plus under these conditions. Is this correct?

In 5'th gear with ~33" Tires @ 55 MPH = 3300 RPM.

Pinzes are military vehicles and have no sound deadening, and engine, drivetrain and tires scream at high speeds. 55 to 60 shouldn't be any difficulty. My old 710M was capable of well over 70 (255/85 tires). Without a tach on it, you need to be sure the speed limiter warning lamp works, comes on at 4500rpm +/-. Trucks in some disrepairs won't turn highway rpms. If nothing else, put a tach on it so you can have a feel for the engine noise at over 4000 rpm, that may give you an idea of the noise level. The noise is discerning to many, but these are old vehicles and not designed for economy or modern road speed, typical convoy speeds would been at below 55 mph

You're running TD transmission and 5th is .78 +/- overdrive. 4th is the same as a 710/712 transmission

Yes, I am running the TD, and in 5'th gear @ 60MPH I'm CRANKING at 2800 RPM.
With the stock tranie, 5'th gear @55 = 3300 RPM, @60 = 3600 RPM. IMHO, with
the stock tranie, I'd keep it at 55 or less.

Try rolling your top back then test drive it. Youll likely feel better about doing 55mph. Those slick tops reflect all that sound right back into the cab.

Acceleration to highway speeds is not rapid however you should not have problems getting there however IMHO ear plugs are a must for any extended travel over 40, 45 mph.

I should have added a couple of other points about speed >55 Mph.
Noise and Engine RPM being two, but the other is Wheel drive wear
and tear -- there's very little oil in these wheel drives. Of course the
other reason is stability and safety.
With respect to noise, easier on a K than M, but toss in 100 lbs or
so of sound deadening materials and anti-vibration foil will make
a huge difference. I keep forgetting all the mods in my rig that I
take for granted -- low noise being one, well, relatively speaking.
With the TD Tranie, and 2.7L I do cruse comfortably at 60 mph on
the HWY -- grade permitting. I never go over 50'ish on step winding
down-grades, slow and safe. My best friends on the HWY are big rigs,
draft behind them at 55 or so. Of all the truck companies Schneider
sticks to the speed limit +- 1 Mph, best drivers I have lagged

My bad kids. Appaently one of my darling chidren had through the Hi/Lo lever. After beating the kids shufting back into Hi it now cruises 55-60 no sweat.
