Catch can

Has anyone ever installed a catch can on a gas Pinzgauer? Google 'catch can' if you're not familiar with the term.

I would think the Pinz engine would be a good candidate for one.

I couod see it on a boosted engine. Why do you think there is a benefit in our gas pinz with carbs?

It would catch the blow-by oil and keep it out of the intake, therefore off the valves and piston top (carbon build-up). I'm not sure one could be installed on a Pinz anyway as there's no PCV valve. Every Pinz is an oil burner.

I've installed one, but haven't driven it enough to really notice any difference or have to empty accumulation from the can yet. I was hoping it would reduce the oil in the intake manifold. I need to do some work on the Pinz this weekend and will let you know what I find and take some photos.

You could definitely install one in place of the line between the oil filler neck and the carb hat, though you'd obviously need more line. I could definitely see it helping with oil accumulation in intake and thru the carbs.

Here's the catch can I installed in the line between oil filler and air intake hood. There hasn't been much accumulation in it until I checked it yesterday and it was 2/3 full of a fuel/water/sludge mixture. I'm pretty sure this is the same sludge that occurs by condensation within the crankcase. Since the last few months have only seen short drives in cold weather the condensation makes sense. It wasn't the oil I was expecting to see, but at least its not in the engine.

That looks simple to install. Do you have a part number? I think I want to try it.

I found this one on ebay with a search for 'square oil catch can' or breather box. There are hundreds of variations. The quality is OK. I had to do a little touch up with a file at the fittings and buy better hoses. I decided to mount this one low, but you might want to look at installing an Empi VW breather box mounted up high on the firewall near the aircleaner.

I do like that they add a valve at the bottom, so draining is really easy.
