Oil api

Post by Brickren »

So I'm trying to find out the proper API designation for oil. I come up with mil spec 2502 b. I got a lot of obsolete numbers but I can't find a straight answer. I see some people are running 20 50 but it's the end of the year and the manual says 30 weight. So I want to find the correct API. I tried searching the forum came up with 400 plus enturies but I still didn't see what I was looking for

Don't know if you read this thread,

IMHO, there are two things to think about here w.r.t. Oil, proper levels of anti-wear
for these Antique engines with solid lifters, and viscosity -- mono or multi-weight.

I would not worry into looking for the original oil equivalent. All modern oils well exceed the original requirements. I live in Atlanta, about 30F to 100F temp range... And I go between 20W40 and 20W50..

Be forewarned!! Off the shelf oil has insufficient antiwear additives for these older
engines with solid lifters. Use classic car, racing, or aviation oil or your lifters will pit.

I use valvoline VR1 20 50. great for these older engines. Same stuff I use in all my older vehicles. I was looking for a higher zinc content and the valvoline kept coming up on all the different boards for the many different vehicles I run.
