Try as I might to get my pinz to cooperate I can't find the right mix to keep the carbs happy. I have adjusted the float level to within a millimeter of it's life. I am either running to rich and fouling the plugs, or I am lean and backfiring down the road. I would love to get one of the EFI kits and I will check into that with Sean and Jake, but for now I need to get the pinz reliable.

I have been advised to change out my Jets to correct the problem. This is actually the advice I got months ago from a good friend who has done a lot of the work on the truck with me.

The question I have is when I change the jets do I have to change out all of the jets or just the Main jets?

If so, changing jets seems like it shouldn't be the problem.

Welcome to Pinzgauer ownership.... I am constantly trying to get my (three) 710M's to not run like "chitty-chitty-bang-bang", but I've accepted that they will never run as smooth as a newer vehicle. Sometimes an errant backfire will make them mysteriously run better, sometimes a backfire will kill it or make it run like hell!?! The next day, maybe it will decide to run smooth as a prom queens thighs....or maybe it will have trouble just idling! Oh the joys....but seriously, I would not trade a Pinzie for any other 4x4 in the world. I've learned to live with these quirky little buggers!

The pros on this post will respond with suggestions like: adjust the valves, balance the carbs, adjust the floats, adjust the jets, tighten the carb bases, tweak the fuel mix, etc, etc, etc.... maybe jumping up and down on one foot while chanting appeasements to the Pinzie gods is your best bet! Works for me!

That is probably the best bit of advice I have gotten in two years of Pinz ownership! I know this is a thirty year old vehicle and just like a classic MB, Porsche or VW beetle it will never be new again. I have been through jeeps and trucks and never loved a 4WD like I do this truck. I am an old paratrooper and this truck fits me better than any vehicle I have ever owned. I just want it to run as well as I can get it too and I know there is a lot of room for improvement.

Still wondering about the jets though......

The natural inclination for wanting to become involved in "Jetting" a Pinz, is understandable.

There are, however several technical aspects to the " Jetting " process that should not be overlooked.

1) Is it a M-10, or a M-12 that you wish to " Jet "?

My past experience has shown that General Electric power units are superior in the M-10s. There are lots of GE products from which to choose.

My suggestion would be to buy a new one direct from the factory, rather than buy one from a dealer. Just give GE a call and they will be happy to fill your order.

The M-12s are a different storey alltogether.

In the case of the M-12 some will argue that Pratt and Whitney has a superiour power plant, taking into consideration the extra weight of the M-12, and it's superior braking ability due to having 50% more wheels.

Others are convinced that the Burmese made Kalashnikov 47 turbines are more efficient, easier to maintain, and are a guaranteed comfort when certain difficult off-road conditions occur.

I chose the Kalashnikov 47 when I "Jetted" my M-12, and have been happy with it so far.

OK, Tony is off his medication again.

I spent many sessions trying to get my Pinz running right. I followed all suggestions, except I would only hop around on one foot chanting when I would hurt myself.

I gave up and hauled it to Linden in Colorado. They fiddled with it for the better part of a day. The final diagnosis was wear on the carburetor shafts.

There are oversized butterfly shafts available. At the time, Dennis didn't have a reamer suitable for enlarging the existing opening for the new shaft. Apparently the size/length is hard to come by.

I have my own EFI system based on a motorcycle throttle body waiting to be installed. All that is left to do is machine adapters from the throttle body to the Pinz engine.

To answer the question on jets, Yes , just replace all 4 main jets.
The factory main jet is 140 and air correction jets are 60, for high altitude , go to 125 on mains and (optional) 55 on air correction jets.
