Sudden power loss while driving.

Post by Willie »

While pulling a slight hill last weekend at about 50mph on the blacktop my 712 felt like the key had been turned off, at the time there where no other noises, no smoke from the exhaust, I did notice that as long as I kept the pedal to the floor I could keep going but my speed gradually fell until I had to be in 3rd gear and could only maintain about 20mph to get the 1.5 miles home.

When I let off the gas gradually I would hear popping from the carbs, when to the floor again the popping would stop.

So far: new plugs, carbs tight, checked dist cap and rotor, fuel filter.

It has the civilian ignition from EI purchase 2.5 years ago.

Engine seemed to smell very hot when I arrived home.

Now it won't start at all but tries as long pedal is at 50%.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
